Clinch Park Sunrises and Sunsets in Traverse City

Parking spots are hard to come by here in summer, but in November, Clinch Park feels like your own private beach. Sunrises are around 7:30 a.m. this month and sunset hits about 5:20 p.m.; swing by on your way to or from work for an instant dose of happiness.

Hike Arcadia Marsh Nature Preserve

Arcadia Marsh is one of only about 15 remaining coastal marshes along Lake Michigan’s Lower Peninsula shoreline. And it’s gorgeous. From the M-22 trailhead, walk .75 miles (each way) and watch for a sweet family of swans. Friendly heads up, it is hunting season so wear bright colors and stay on the boardwalk. (Hunting is allowed on the property, but not from the boardwalk.)

Cozy Up with a Great Read: A Wish for Winter

Viola Shipman—pen name of USA TODAY bestselling author Wade Rouse—has an irresistibly funny and heartfelt new book, A Wish for Winter, out November 15. And get this: It’s set in Petoskey with cozy cameos of local landmarks (like the town’s own McLean & Eakin Booksellers). It begins with a small-town meet-cute: Protagonist Susan connects with a mystery man (dressed as Santa, as one does) at a holiday fun run, but she doesn’t catch his name… Find the book at local bookstores, pour yourself a cocoa and settle in for what love may come. PS McLean & Eakin welcomes the author to town November 15 at Crooked Tree Arts Theater. —Emily Tyra

Frankfort for Lunch & Winter Surfing

Adventure out to Frankfort for a lunch stop at Stormcloud Brewing Company where you can enjoy a seasonal beer and menu featuring everything from the hot pretzels appetizer (make sure to order the beer queso!) to inventive and delicious pizzas. After lunch, take a short walk to the end of the street where you’ll find the public beach and winter surfers all around (stay off the pier—big waves are dangerous!). No waves to be found? then it might just be safe enough to take a stroll on the pier or simply just enjoy the views from the beach.
