It was just three years ago that Traverse City first allowed food trucks to hold business on city property. Since then, Traverse City food trucks have exploded in popularity, proving suitable as sit-down dining sites, take-out joints, and catering options for private events. The trucks are unique standouts in the Northern Michigan food scene.

Much of this is owed to The Little Fleet, a pub located in downtown Traverse City on Front Street. The Little Fleet was the first business to take advantage of the new ordinance, establishing eight food trucks on the lot in front of the bar. Diverse food and drink options, a prime location, and a family-friendly atmosphere have driven a significant amount of business to the area.

The business model has inspired others. Recently, a food truck area known as The Lot opened for the summer. The Lot is located in Traverse City’s Eighth Street corridor, taking over a deserted lot situated between Boardman Avenue and Wellington Street. Owners Scott and Erica Pierson hope to bring more resident activity to a usually empty part of the city. Their hopes are that The Lot can attract as much business as The Little Fleet, adding vibrancy to the Eighth Street corridor.

The Lot currently hosts six food trucks, with two more trucks in the planning stages. Learn more about the new trucks below, and make sure to stop by The Lot for great local food options!

Cordwood BBQ

Betty’s Hot Dish

Betty’s Hot Dish specializes in delicious homemade soups. Recipes range from traditional home-style soups to original recipes. There are different specialty soups just about every day.

Norma’s Tamales

Norma’s Tamales offers fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine. Tamales, tacos, and tortillas—it’s all here.

Uptown Dogs

Uptown Dogs is a classic city hot dog stand. Local ingredients and farm-style condiments ensure a unique taste you won’t get anywhere else.

Wingz & Thingz

Wingz & Thingz is a popular food truck in the area and a frequent caterer for big concerts. It’s not hard to see why—the selection of wings stretches through the roof. Other “thingz” on the menu include sandwiches, burgers, pizza, and fries.

La Tropicana Fruit Cup

La Tropicana Fruit Cup offers healthy chilled refreshments with their menu of tropical fruit cups and fresh water drinks.
