Old Town Playhouse’s newest Northern Michigan stage production is one part drama, one part comedy, and one part Southern hospitality: check out Steel Magnolias, and read on to learn how your attendance helps give back to women who’ve survived breast cancer or are living with diabetes. How do six Southern women cope with the difficulties associated with their health, home lives and friendships? Do they wither away, or do they grow together?
In Steel Magnolias, Old Town Playhouse’s newest production, the resolve of a group of small-town friends is put to the test. Focusing on Shelby, a diagnosed diabetic, Steel Magnolias interweaves a number of struggles—of both the life threatening and humorously pedestrian varieties—with quick-witted dialogue and the classic charm of a half-dozen Southern Bells.
Despite the serious implications of the plot, Steel Magnolias is ultimately a story of breakthrough and positivity, which is why the producers of the show have made the play a catalyst for community support for women’s health issues. Numerous Northern Michigan salons have already agreed to contribute a free makeover to women who have either survived breast cancer or live with diabetes: those to receive makeovers will be selected through a nomination process conducted through Lite 96.3’s website.
Says Steel Magnolias producer Betsy Willis: “We’re inviting all of the women who receive makeovers to attend out May 15th show to have a healthy reception and show.”
