Northern Michigan fishing was light for the week with decent yellow perch catches when the weather allowed and some fair steelhead fishing. Upper Peninsula fishing saw walleye continuing to struggle and three launches closed for the season.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has been working hard this fall to gather the eggs necessary for the continued production of hatchery fish that support Michigan’s world-class fisheries, and that effort will continue this winter. Fall egg-takes have been completed for wild Chinook and coho salmon, but are ongoing for captive broodstocks – the mature fish used for breeding – of brown, rainbow, brook and lake trout.
All anglers 17 years of age and older are required to have a fishing license.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Traverse City: When the weather was decent, anglers were finding good numbers of yellow perch in 40 to 90 feet of water. Minnows and wax worms were working well.
Manistee: Steelhead fishing was fair. Low and clear water conditions have made fishing tough for the last couple of weeks, but some fish were caught.

Upper Peninsula
Little Bay de Noc: Walleye anglers continued to struggle. There were reports of some fish caught at Center Reef. Smallmouth anglers launching out of Kipling had some success.
Big Bay de Noc: Greatly reduced fishing pressure. The Fayette, Nahma, Garden and Fish Dam boat launches have been pulled for the season.
