Skeleton Redcoats patrol the gate and werewolves howl from within at Colonial Michilimackinac during Fort Fright. The annual family-friendly event in Mackinaw City will take place October 7 and 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. both nights.

Walk the lantern-lit trail in the 18th-century fort and fur trading village, and listen on as French voyageurs tell eerie tales by the campfire. Then enjoy ghostly goodies such as hot mulled cider and cookies by colonial fireplaces, and explore the haunted rowhouse.

“The stories and chilling ambiance shared at Fort Fright often have modern day counterparts, but they are still new and different with many twists,” says Mackinac State Historic Parks Public Relations Officer Kelsey Schnell. “By combining the nuances of the oral history and live interpretation of the terrifying characters, we’re able to create a fun and, at times, spooky atmosphere for all ages. It’s the stories and the individuals sharing them that make this such a chilling and memorable experience—leaving you to wonder if that noise you hear is really just the wind, or perhaps something far more frightening.”

Colonial Michilimackinac Fort Fright tickets are available online and at the Colonial Michilimackinac Visitors Center in Mackinaw City. Last admission is at 8:30 p.m.

Ticket prices:

  • Adult: $8
  • Child (5-12): $5
  • Children 4 and under: Free

Fort FrightWhile in Mackinaw City, visitors can also stop by Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park. A special “Mainland Combo” ticket gets visitors into all three parks ($24 for adults and $14 for kids). “It makes for a great little weekend getaway or a day trip for folks in Northern Michigan,” Kelsey says. “The sites are all highly accessible with a wide variety of programs going on.”

Colonial Michilimackinac, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Historic Mill Creek Discover Park are open until Sunday, October 9.
