ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Employee must be a High School graduate or equivalent. Completion of college or hospital based Cardiovascular Program or Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or completion of Allied Health Program approved by the AMA.

Employee must be able to do 2D echoes, M-mode, Cardiac Doppler, and Color Flow Doppler.

Employee must have a minimum of 1 year of clinical training/experience with performing basic 2D Echocardiography, M-mode, Cardiac Doppler, and Color Flow Doppler.

Employee must be a Registered Cardiovascular Diagnostic Sonographer (RCDS) or a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) which is credentialed by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Employee must perform examinations in an acceptable time frame using a variety of complex equipment.

Employee must cover on-call and weekends as scheduled.

ORGANIZATION

This position is under the general supervision of the Manager of Cardiac Diagnostic Suite and Traverse Heart & Vascular and direct supervision of the Traverse Heart and Vascular Ultrasound Coordinator, in addition to the Director of Cardiology and the Medical Director of Cardiac Diagnostic Suite and Traverse Heart and Vascular. Has a close working relationship with the cardiologists and medical staff and consistently comes in contact with members of the nursing staff.

This position will be a service line position meaning that individuals selected for this position will be required to cover various sites within the Munson Healthcare Cardiovascular Service line. The service line includes Cardiac Diagnostic Suite @ Webber Heart Center Traverse City, Traverse Heart & Vascular Traverse City, Cadillac and Grayling, Munson Healthcare Cadillac, Munson Healthcare Grayling, Kalkaska Memorial Health Clinic and Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.

There is a continuous working relationship with other members of the CDS/THV team (medical staff, nursing staff and physician office staff).

Employee is required to cooperate with all department personnel in a positive and professional manner, maintaining ethical relationships and maintain a positive and loyal attitude towards employer.

There is no supervisory or managerial responsibility with the position. Position may require traveling outside the hospital.

HUMAN RELATIONS

Employee must be capable of working without direct supervision, within guidelines set by department heads.

Provide patient care, obtain patient history, and communicate with patients and relatives.

Employee must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Employee must maintain professional appearance by adhering to Dress Code of the Cardiac Diagnostic Suite.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Interprets priority of work when high volume situations arise, still maintaining departmental goals and objectives.

Must be able to improvise and adapt standard procedures to fit nonstandard circumstances.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires working in dimly lit, clean surroundings.

At times works under stress.

Stands and walks most of the time within Cardiology Department and periodically throughout the hospital.

Employee is exposed to frequent lifting and pulling/pushing loads (transporting patients and machine).

Employee will be exposure to the unknown effects of ultrasound.

Employee handles equipment in a responsible, professional manner.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Level II sonographer, or lead tech (lead tech must be a full-time staff member with at least 3 years of active employment with CDS).

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare.

  3. Promotes personal and patient safety.

  4. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.

  5. Has basic understanding of AIDET principles (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, Thank You) and applies those principles to daily patient care.

  6. Performs routine and STAT two dimensional echocardiograms, M-mode and cardiac Doppler studies with direct supervision within guidelines set by department heads.

  7. Performs adult 2D Echocardiograms, M-mode, PW & CW Doppler, and Color Spectral Doppler.

  8. Administers ultrasound contrast agents according to the protocol outlined in Policy #077.G016. Required to complete initial competency regarding the administration of these agents, in addition to annual competencies thereafter.

  9. Assists physicians in performance of other related examinations, such as pericardialcentesis.

  10. Solicits feedback from cardiologists to assure they are satisfied with procedures and technique.

  11. Sonographer evaluates the echocardiography studies for any life threatening abnormalities and pathologies and immediately notifies the interpreting physicians.

  12. Solicits feedback from cardiologists to assure they are satisfied with procedures and technique.

  13. Performs departmental procedures while the patient is in isolation and disinfects the equipment immediately after the procedure.

  14. Performs all patient reports for the interpreting physician per department policy to ensure a timely distribution to the patient’s medical record and the referring physician.

  15. Compiles all patient information and billing information for each study done for the interpreting physician.

  16. Completes patient charges through the hospital computer system for all procedures done on both inpatients and outpatients.

  17. Schedules an organized workload as necessary to ensure efficient utilization of equipment and time.

  18. Cleans, calibrates, and adjusts equipment to keep it in good maintenance. Notifies section leader or manager when repairs have to be made.

  19. It is the responsibility of this position to make sure that the operational supplies have been ordered for the echocardiography procedures.

  20. Rotates on-call to cover after regularly scheduled department hours of operation.

  21. Performs echocardiography services in affiliate hospitals.

  22. May be required to drive to affiliate hospitals.

  23. May be required to cover when other sonographers are on vacation or during unforeseen absence.

  24. May be required to perform CPR until the code blue team arrives.

  25. When echocardiographic procedures have been completed is required to assist with other CDS procedures as needed.

  26. Keeps current regarding developments in trends and techniques of Sonography by reading technical journals, participating inservice education programs, attending conferences, etc. Maintaining an active status with the ARDMS and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International, by meeting all continuing education requirements.

  27. Is expected to be proficient with digital reporting and electronic worksheet.

  28. Offers suggestions to improve operations in area of expertise.

  29. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
