About Registered Nurse/Cardiovascular Tech

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Graduate of an approved school of Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Cardiovascular Technology, Nursing, or related Associate or Bachelors Degree.

Certified as a Cardiovascular Technologist with a specialty in invasive cardiology.

Must be ACLS certified. A formal course in pharmacology during training is desirable.

Registered as a Cardiovascular Technologist with a specialty in invasive cardiology desired.

AS or BS in a related field desired.

One year in an active Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

Experience in more intensive procedures such as angioplasty and eletrophysiology desired.

RN Minimum Requirements:

Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Michigan.

For those hired into an RN position prior to January 1, 2009, it is encouraged to obtain a BSN. Certification in the specialty area of practice is also encouraged.

For those hired into an RN position after January 1st, 2009, it is required to obtain a BSN within 10 years of start date.

For those hired into an RN position after January 1st, 2015, it is required to obtain a BSN within 5 years of start date.

Current BCLS certification.

Current ACLS certification.

Previous work experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab or minimum of one year experience in critical care.

Basic computer knowledge.

Job Duties:

Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other team members as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.

Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.

Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Demonstrates the ability to handle emergency situations during high risk procedures.

Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently.

Directs and assists in maintenance and handling of special equipment, monitors and instruments.

Preps and drapes patients correctly for all procedures.

Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during all procedures.

Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications, contrast and parenteral fluids as per facility policies and procedures.

Respects patient’s confidentiality and the right to privacy.

Demonstrates knowledge of arterial lines, Swan-Ganz and how to document appropriately.

Is able to open sterile supplies and set-up for procedure.

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all Cardiac Cath Laboratory equipment.

Ensures pre-op checklist is complete (H&P present, informed consent signed, test results present, prosthesis/dentures, contacts/glasses) before patient is taken into procedure room.

Documents patient data during the procedure (heart rate, blood pressure, respirations, all pressures, O2 saturation, EKG).

Maintains procedure records.

Starts IVs; monitors IV fluids and patency of IVs.

Documents supply charges for all procedures.

Moves and transports patients safely.

Responsible for daily check of emergency crash cart and defibrillator.

Utilizes MMC processes and protocols for dispensation of medications via Pyxis systems.

Is able to perform all duties of circulating and scrub nurses.

Demonstrates knowledge of radiation safety.

Maintains patients’ films (CDs) and records.

Responsible for performing clerical duties as required.

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of:

Proper Cardiac Cath Lab attire Surgical scrub procedures Gown and gloving technique Cardiac Cath Lab sterile technique

Event-related shelf-life

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of infectious control practices including:

Cleaning in between cases and terminal cleaning

Humidity and temperature control of the procedure room

Demonstrates the ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor all cath lab procedures, including but not limited to:

Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization

All Cath Lab Interventional Procedures (PTCA, Stent, Thrombectomy, Rotablator, Fractional Flow Reserve, Peripheral PTA and Stenting, etc)

Endomyocardial Biopsy

Insertion Arterial line, Central line, Swan-Ganz

Intra-aortic Balloon

Intravascular Ultrasound

Permanent Pacemaker Implant

Temporary Pacemaker Insertion
