About Physical Therapy Assistant


Graduate of an approved Physical Therapist Assistant Program.

Previous clinical experience desirable but not mandatory for this position.


Reports to the Physical Therapy Director/Manager.

Daily clinical activities are under the direction of the physical therapists.

Has working relationships with physical therapy department staff on a daily basis.

This position has need for efficient interaction with other professional people in the hospital, patients, and patient families.

May be assigned to any Rehab Service Line facility.

Performs job duties safely at all times, utilizing learned body mechanics and transferring/lifting techniques. Plans actions to promote safety. Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to Hospital procedure.

  5. Performs physical therapy procedures and modalities within the parameters of the initial and ongoing treatment plan as delegated by the physical therapist. Verbal changes to the treatment plan will be so noted in documentation.

  6. Performs measuring procedures, such as range of motion, gross strength of muscle groups, length and girth, and vital signs as indicated.

  7. Interprets the above measurements with regard to the patient’s progress towards previously established long and short term goals.

  8. Within the guidelines of the treatment plan, adjusts specific treatment procedure in accordance with changes in patient status. The PTA will discontinue any treatment procedures which in their judgment appear to be harmful to the patient.

  9. Responds to inquiries regarding patient status to appropriate parties as they relate to the established treatment plan and goals. Refers inquiries regarding patient prognosis to a supervising physical therapist.

  10. Provides supervision, along with the physical therapist, of physical therapy aides involved in the treatment of their patients.

  11. As a member of the treatment team, assists in the patient’s periodic reassessments.

  12. Attends patient care conferences and chart rounds on the patient, and reports on the patient’s status towards treatment goals.

  13. Provides documentation o treatment program and relays same to the physical therapist for co-signature.

  14. Participates in quality assurance activities of the department.

  15. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
