About Lead Trauma Registrar


This position works under the direction of the Trauma Program Manager. This position serves all Munson Healthcare hospitals, ensuring appropriate staff have the education, training, process and auditing skills to effectively meet the requirements of the State-required trauma registry program. This position periodically visits individual hospital staff for training and consultation, and convenes cross-System staff and providers to build an effective trauma registry team.


Associate’s degree in Health Record Technology or equivalent required; a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management is preferred.

Minimum of two years of experience with ICD-10-CM/ ICD-9-CM coding systems is required.

Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Coding Specialist (CCS) is preferred.

Preferred certification in job-related area (i.e. CSTR).

Must complete the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Registrar Course and the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling Course (C 15-7) within 12 months of hire (unless already completed).

Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest in field of expertise. Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to learn.

Ability to proficiently create and utilize databases, word-processing, spreadsheets, presentation programs and other software relevant to the job. Requires technical knowledge of hospital applications data query software spreadsheets and report generating software. Internet, Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access required.

Possess basic understanding of math and statistics.

Demonstrates excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills, relating to physicians and other healthcare professionals and a positive customer relations philosophy.

Possess strong organizational, time management and communication skills and attention to detail required.

Demonstrates knowledge and practice of confidentiality as it pertains to HIPPA and the handling of information sensitive to Munson Healthcare.

Regularly communicates both orally and in writing with physicians, management and health care professionals to make presentations, discuss findings, answer questions, and obtain or exchange information pertinent to their information requirement.

Self-directed; able to work effectively and efficiently with multiple interruptions and changing work priorities. Strong organizational and time management skills required. Demonstrates initiative and creativity in assigned work. Highly detailed and team oriented.


Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service.


No direct patient care contact.

  6. Abstraction and interpretation of patient medical records with in-depth chart reviews regarding trauma patient populations with ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM code assignment ISS scoring, comorbidities, treatments, complications, medications, MTQIP and TQIP process measures.

  7. Works in collaboration with Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program (MTQIP), National Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP), and the State of Michigan as a State Wide Trauma System.

  8. Performs quarterly uploads from V5 trauma registry to TQIP, MTQIP, and the State of Michigan Trauma data banks.

  9. Manages data collection to meet the requirements of a Level II designated Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

  10. Attends MTQIP and Michigan Trauma Registrar group quarterly meetings, TQIP yearly meeting, State of Michigan Trauma meetings as assigned.

  11. Works with Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to develop audit filters, tracking and trending of practice issues, or other system or outcome process related issues.

  12. Responsible for all upgrades, maintenance and software updates for Trauma Registry in collaboration with Trauma Registry technical support company.

  13. Compiles list of Level I, Level II and Level III patient activation charges for billing purposes based on approved criteria guidelines.

  14. Prepares monthly data statistics for Trauma Performance Improvement meeting and has a threshold minimum of 75% meeting attendance yearly for both Trauma Performance and Trauma Service Committee meetings.

  15. Acts as resource/trainer/mentor to Munson Medical Center employees, Munson’s affiliates and Regional State institutions

  16. Prepares and gathers data to complete American College of Surgeons (ACS) Pre-Review Questionnaire (PRQ), assists in planning, preparation and on-site review process.

  17. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
