Laboratory Assistant II

Salary Range:$12.18 Commensurate with experience
The Laboratory Assistant II collects and prepares blood samples for laboratory testing, enters specimen collections in the lab information system, and assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. The Lab Assistant II also assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records.
Uses skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to obtain blood samples.
Follows defined process in obtaining samples including verifying patient information, labeling specimen vials, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Disposes of contaminated needles, blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into appropriate system(s).
Processes specimens according to established guidelines.
Organizes blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use.
Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Light Work: Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree, or when it involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.
- Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOR).
