Job Details:

The Laboratory Assistant II collects and prepares blood samples for laboratory testing, enters specimen collections in the lab information system, and assists medical technologists and/or pathologists in performing designated laboratory tests. The Lab Assistant II also assists with maintaining laboratory equipment and records.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uses skin puncture and venipuncture techniques to obtain blood samples.

  • Follows defined process in obtaining samples including verifying patient information, labeling specimen vials, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

  • Disposes of contaminated needles, blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.

  • Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into appropriate system(s).

  • Processes specimens according to established guidelines.

  • Organizes blood-drawing trays, ensuring that all instruments are sterile and all needles, syringes, or related items are of first-time use.

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.

  • Performs other related duties as required and directed.

  • Light Work: Lifting 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree, or when it involves sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Previous experience drawing blood or phlebotomy training course in approved program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified as a phlebotomy technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOR).
