Interlochen Center for the Arts (“Interlochen” or “ICA”), a national leader among educational, artistic, and cultural organizations, seeks an HR Generalist. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual with exceptional communication and relationship building skills.

Interlochen Center for the Arts comprises a unique portfolio of core assets in the arts, including the nation’s first and foremost summer arts camp, Interlochen Arts Camp (“Camp” or “IAC”); the premier arts boarding high school in the world, Interlochen Arts Academy (”Academy” or “IAA”); a year-round arts festival, Interlochen Presents (IP); a network of seven radio stations serving Michigan and the world, Interlochen Public Radio (IPR); and an adult arts education program, Interlochen College of Creative Arts (ICCA).  Interlochen’s faculty, staff, and seasonal employees are accomplished artists and educators in their own right. Interlochen’s HR Generalist will be expected to build on this extraordinary momentum. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Human and Institutional Resources, The candidate must have a proven record of success in recruitment, employee relations and experience coordinating schedules and events. The HR Generalist should be a data-driven, a team player, and a relationship builder with an ambitious spirit who has the ability to work across this multi-functional department and organization.  

Reporting to the Executive Director, Human and Institutional Resources the HR Generalist is responsible for enhancing the HR department’s functions through carefully designed and executed processes, policies, and procedures. ICA will look to its HR Generalist to support excellence and to astutely understand and communicate with other HR team members and faculty and staff across the organization.  


  • Recruits for hourly and salaried non-exempt positions

  • Assists hiring managers with position profile updates

  • Posts positions and removes postings when the position is filled or as needed

  • Schedules all job interviews for HR with interview committees and creates itineraries for candidates.

  • Conducts phone, video, and in-person interviews

  • Assists with Camp and Academy recruiting and Camp check-in as needed

  • Reviews job offers with Executive Director, HR to determine next steps

  • Acts as back-up for Assistant Director, Talent Acquisition in their absence

  • May attend career fairs locally and regionally

Employee Relations

  • Manages employee relations issues for hourly and salaried non-exempt positions

  • Conducts investigations and reports findings to Executive Director, HR to determine best course of action

  • Encourages department leaders and managers to follow the progressive performance management process when needed.

  • Works with Employee Engagement and Training Specialist to review training options to recommend for employees  

  • Manages annual employee handbook updates to ensure all policies are updated and tracks all electronic signatures.

  • may be asked to develop policies

  • Assists HRIS data Analyst with annual evaluation process  

  • Acts as back-up for Executive Director, HR for employee relations issues in their absence

  • Works with HR team to manage documents and streamline and simplify processes

Employee Engagement and Wellness

  • Partners with employee engagement team (Assistant Director Employee Engagement and Volunteer Services and the Employee Engagement and Training Specialist) and for all employee communications to be sent campus wide to ensure proper look, feel, branding and format

  • Assists with annual employee and volunteer events as needed if available

  • Participates in HR related events such as wellness week, annual employee and volunteer appreciation events, holiday events for employees and volunteers

  • Acts as a resource for employees by providing requested departmental information

Employee Benefits, Compliance and Data

  • Acts as back-up for Sr. HR Specialist Benefits and Compliance in their absence or as needed

  • Acts as back-up for HRIS Data Analyst in their absence

  • May be asked to assist on special projects

  • May assist with future system implementations


Technology is a main focus of this position through the use of applicant tracking systems (ATS) and human resources information systems (HRIS) to develop, evaluate, and report key metrics.  Will coordinate and schedule candidates for phone/video and in-person interviews, maintain all current position profiles, identifies qualified candidates via internet search engines, submitted resumes, networking and referrals.


  • Bachelor’s Degree with two years of experience in an HR department

  • Must have employee relations experience

  • Tech Savvy

  • MS Office/Google Docs

  • MAC/PC

  • Experience with HR and applicant tracking systems
