The Director of Research and Development directs and coordinates research and analysis concerning chemistry and processing of foods to develop and improve food and beverage products. This position reports to the Director of Operations.
The Director of Research and Development also performs the following functions and duties:
*Provides technical leadership for the design, development, and implementation of product development initiatives to support strategic goals and pursue business objectives. *Experiments with natural and synthetic materials or by products to develop new foods and related products. *Studies effects of various methods of processing, preservation, and packaging on composition and properties of foods such as color, texture, aroma, taste, shelf life, and nutritive content. *Tests food and beverage samples such as colors, flavors, sweeteners, canned and dehydrated food products, and other products to ensure compliance with food laws, and standards of quality and purity. *Performs research tests in food processing, canning, freezing, infusing, dehydrating, and concentrating. *Coordinates technical liaison services between management, production department, sales department, and customers with newly developed techniques or practices in processing company products. *Coordinates technical liaison services to inform customers of new types, specifications, and end uses of products. *Confers with production department managers to assist in specific classification of products from quality assurance position, report on new product or process technology of competitors, and to discuss new specifications required by customers. *Surveys potential markets for increasing sales.
Master’s Degree (M.S.), or foreign equivalent, in Food Science or related field.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publications that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Travel / Additional Worksite Requirements:Â 15% periodic short-term travel to Employer’s Additional Worksite d/b/a Oceana Foods in Shelby, Michigan.
