About Director of Nursing – Acute Care Services

SUMMARY

This position provides strategic leadership and administration for assigned areas and/or service lines. Responsibilities include systematically implementing and enhancing all areas of True North. The director is responsible for patient care, nursing practice, safety and quality in accordance with organizational policies, evidence-based practice, and standards of professional nursing practice in their assigned areas. The director promotes a professional practice environment and develops and maintains collegial and collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders across the institution to positively impact all areas of True North.

Provides effective leadership by role modeling behaviors that promote professional and open communication. Demonstrates strategic thinking leading to action; is accountable for outcomes in all aspects of their responsible area. Responsible for integrating the strategic plan and execution of MMC’s goals and objectives through effective collaboration, quality, key performance indicators, patient relationships, team member communication and engagement. Assures that staff is practicing within their expected / appropriate scope and that effective and efficient patient care and patient safety is achieved.

The director collaborates with the unit / department managers to continuously improve processes and care, maintain employee and patient safety and satisfaction, maintain compliance with accreditation standards and attain operating goals. Facilitates and coordinates activities between departments not directly reporting to the director but are integrally a part of the departments of responsibility.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • A master’s degree in nursing, business administration, hospital administration or a related field is required. If the masters is non-nursing, the candidate must have a BSN.Candidates currently enrolled in a master’s program will be considered; the degree must be complete within 18 months of accepting the role.

  • Three or more years of experience in a management / leadership position.

  • Registered Nursing License in Michigan.

  • Knowledge of scope of practice for all job descriptions of clinical staff in reporting departments.

  • Demonstrated understanding of health care finance, statistics and data management is required.

  • Must exercise high levels of public relations, organizational and speaking skills.

  • Demonstrated entrepreneurship and creativity in problem solving.

  • Personal computer literacy is required.

ORGANIZATION

The position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer/Vice President of Patient Care Services of Munson Medical Center and, dependent upon the areas of responsibility, there may be additional reporting relationships.

The Director of Nursing works closely and positively with nursing leadership, staff nurses, physicians, Administration, peers, other employees and the community in general.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Using the Nursing Process, Scope and Standards of Professional Practice, the Code of Ethics for Nurses and the state law, the role directs clinical practice, coordinates patient service delivery, educates and develops staff, manages the work environment and manages the budget to meet organizational goals. The leader in this role collaborates with multiple stakeholders and departments and functions under the direction of the Vice President Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer and may have other reporting relationships (as noted below).

  • Knowledgeable regarding applicable health care regulations and accrediting agency requirements.

  • Collaborates with stakeholders across disciplines and the organization to achieve outcomes.

Acute Care or Critical Care The Director incorporates the oversight of nursing in their assigned units / clinics / areas of responsibility. The director collaborates with the unit / department manager to continuously improve processes and care, maintain employee and patient safety and satisfaction and attain operating goals.
