About Certified Medical Assistant

Provides patient care in the physician’s office setting. Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general needs of patients. Provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of an RN, LPN or physician.

Provides direct patient care under the supervision of a LPN, RN or physician.

Evaluates outcomes and consults with other health team members as required.

Ability to assist nurses and physicians with routine exams and patient treatments on patients of all age groups: neonate/infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Notifies appropriate licensed personnel, when patient complains of pain.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served.

Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.

Ability to position and prep patients for office procedures.

Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians, office manager, nursing co-workers, and subordinate staff.

Utilizes skills of subordinate staff (receptionists and medical records clerks) appropriately and cooperatively.

Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills under direction of a physician, RN or LPN.

Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.

Successfully and effectively communicates with patients of all ages and social/intellectual levels.

Willingly and cooperatively performs all duties as assigned.

Participates in a team approach, interacting effectively with all team members.

Maintains infection control standards for exam and procedure rooms; cleans, disinfects, changes linen, etc.

Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.

Labels and records all test tubes. Logs procedures and files paperwork

Knowledgeable about the correct color top tube to utilize and the volume of blood needed – knows test requirements.

Follows universal/standard precautions at all times.

Appropriately utilizes e-mail, voice mail, telephones and fax machines.

Disposes all sharps in a rigid sharps container.

Cleans and stocks venipuncture work area. Orders supplies when needed.

Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.

Maintains established office policies and procedures on safety, infection control, patient confidentiality, performance improvement and fire prevention.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Medical Assistant Certification

OR Certification eligible as a Medical Assistant and successful completion of Medical Assistant Registry within 90 days of hire required.
