About Assitant Manager – Behavioral Health

The Outpatient Assistant Behavioral Health Manager is responsible for supporting management and oversight of clinical operations and patient care for Outpatient Behavioral Health services. This includes but is not limited to: leadership and program development, staff supervision and scheduling, day-to-day clinical operations, addressing patient-care needs, administrative tasks, compliance and quality initiatives, and other management related tasks.


Master’s degree in human services field (e.g., social work, psychology, counseling) required.

State of Michigan Counseling License required with either LMSW (License Master’s Social Worker or LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor).

Evidence of supervision of Behavioral Health treatment staff and treatment practices within the health care setting that demonstrates leadership and supervisory capabilities preferred.

Ability to work well as part of the leadership team.

Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in Behavioral Health evidence based treatment concepts and applications.

Ability to direct others and negotiate for desired results.

Demonstrates decision-making and problem solving skills.

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use computers.


Reports to the Manager of Behavioral Health Services. As assigned, assumes responsibility and duties for the Manager in his/her absence.

Has frequent contact with the Behavioral Health staff including internal and external customers as indicated by patient, program and hospital needs.

Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to Hospital procedure.

  5. Manages the department’s day-to-day operations, including practice standards, staffing, education and quality improvement.

  6. Attends weekly Clinical meetings related to patient review and quality care. Provides periodic clinical back-up coverage as needed for consistent patient care.

  7. Coaches all personnel to perform their responsibilities with efficiency and compassion.

  8. Provides leadership and guidance to clinical staff to facilitate performance of their duties.

  9. Provides leadership and direction in developing, implementing and revising patient care standards consistent with hospital, mental health, substance use and regulatory standards.

  10. Assists with all compliance expectations to include federal, state, regional entity, and Joint Commission standards. Assists the Manager in the development of the vision, goals and objectives and assumes accountability for the achievement of these.

  11. Identifies and analyzes quality improvement and utilization review, and promotes staff involvement in implementing improvement and maintaining education.

  12. Manages the department’s day-to-day operations, including practice standards, staffing, education and quality improvement.

  13. Works in collaboration with the Manager in hiring process. Administers corrective action up to termination as appropriate per policy.

  14. Maintains employee files, including PAA’s and Leave of Absence documentation. Coordinates coverage of job responsibilities for employees taking PTO or leave.

  15. Administers Annual Discussions.

  16. Manages Payroll and timekeeping records for employees.

  17. Represents behavioral health at MMC and community meetings.

  18. Participates in the budgeting process and has intermediate accountability for the budget.

  19. Accountable for department efficiencies and the appropriate utilization of resources.

  20. Keeps Manager informed of activities, decisions and assignments as appropriate.

  21. Works directly with patients and staff to resolve grievance satisfaction issues.

  22. Maintains own professional growth, demonstrates awareness of new practice trends, analyzes those trends for application, shares new information, and participates in appropriate educational offerings.

  23. Provides periodic on-call coverage for residential programming.

  24. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
