About Assistant General Counsel – Labor Relations


  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school

  • Admitted to Michigan Bar, or eligible for admission via reciprocity

  • Minimum 7 years of experience negotiating labor contracts for large employers, preferably healthcare.

  • Experience handling labor law disputes, including grievances, mediation, administrative hearings, arbitration, and/or trials.

  • Excellent judgment and the ability to analyze problems, propose solutions, and provide strategic advice taking into account the organization’s defined goals.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, including proficient technology skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, manage varied caseload, and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a philosophy of creating a high-trust culture.

  • Demonstrated current knowledge of federal and state labor and employment law.


Reports to: Vice President Legal Affairs and General Counsel; will receive day-to-day assignments and direction from the Vice President of Human Resources.

  1. Supports the Mission of Munson Healthcare.

  2. Embraces and supports Munson’s True North.

  3. Represents the organization in collective bargaining and serves as chief spokesperson and negotiator for all union negotiations.

  4. Advises and assists in the administration of collective bargaining agreements, contract interpretation, grievance and discipline administration.

  5. Prepares for and conducts labor arbitrations and represents the organization in labor organizing campaigns, Unfair Labor Practices and other matters before the National Labor Relations Board.

  6. Provides consultation and mediation regarding work-related issues, conflicts, discipline policy/procedures, questions and contract interpretation.

  7. Identifies labor relations training needs. Assists in the design of training and ensures training is delivered effectively to target audiences.

  8. Develops and implements a standardized approach to handling all levels of labor relations issues.

  9. Provide advice and counsel to Human Resources and Management teams on federal and state employment laws (wage & hour, ADA, Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, etc).

  10. Assists in drafting legal documents, policies, resolutions. Understands and communicates legal issues affecting the operations of Munson including applicable laws and regulations, and acts to ensure that Munson operates within those legal restraints.

  11. Serves as a member of the Munson Healthcare management team, providing appropriate comment on issues other than legal matters.

  12. Assists in ensuring that Munson receives value for its expenditures for legal services by monitoring the work performed by retained counsel for quality, efficiency, performance and results.

  13. Works with the other members of the Legal Department to develop skills and breadth of knowledge regarding its affairs.

  14. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Munson Compliance Program, Code of Ethics, Conflicts of Interest, as well as other policies and procedures.

  15. Represents Munson and its values in the several communities it serves and in the greater healthcare community by demonstrated personal and professional behavior at an exemplary level.

  16. Performs all functions and activities with the highest level of professionalism, confidentiality and tact.

  17. Performs responsibilities efficiently under pressure and diligently attempts to comply with short deadlines, as required.

  18. Keeps abreast of legislation affecting Munson.

  19. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
