Basic Description:

This is a unique leadership role within the Hobart Aluminum business that will serve as head of aluminum wire technology and product efforts. This person is expected to have a B.S. degree in Metallurgical or Materials Science Engineering. An MBA or some business experience OR desired is preferred, but not mandatory.

These responsibilities include product development and innovation, quality system accountability, and managing pricing agreements. The primary challenge of this position is the directing of technical and commercial processes to keep Hobart Aluminum the premier supplier of aluminum welding wire in North America.

The Hobart Filler Metals division is part of ITW Welding North America. This role will have a high degree of autonomy and will support one of the accelerated growth segments within Hobart Brothers. He/she will be based in Traverse City, Michigan and will report to the Business Unit Manager, who is located in Troy, Ohio.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop and execute overall vision and strategy for the aluminum wire product line.

  • Responsible for growth, market performance, and margin management.

  • Develop technologically advanced product characteristics and products.

  • Ensure that all products sold are manufactured, tested and meet the requirements of controlling societies, customers and certification registry specifications and standards.

  • Act as a conduit of communication between sales/marketing and the operations team.

  • Manage the customer technical support system and the customer complaint system, communications with the customers and plant corrective action requirements. The “20” Responsibilities:

  • Significant involvement in various levels of aluminum training offered within and outside the organization.

  • Participate in industry society and association code and standard writing committees, where appropriate.

  • Help develop new product/solution ideas based on contact with customers and prospects.

  • Support aluminum technology intellectual property activities.

  • Accountable to work and support Hobart Brothers’ quality management systems.

  • Responsible for supplier qualification and quality.

Job Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Metallurgical or Materials Science Engineering. MBA or some business experience OR desire is preferred.

  • Demonstrated work experience in the manufacture of aluminum, its alloys, alloy properties and product manufacturing such as wire drawing, rolling, forging and/or extrusion.

  • Experience in and/or a strong desire to gain commercial and business responsibility/experience.

  • Strong knowledge OR interest in welding processes and wire drawing processes required.

  • Team player with a positive attitude, high motivation, and solid decision making.

  • Thrive in a culture with a high degree of trust and a high degree of accountability.

  • Ability to build relationships among employees, distributors, and key end-users.

  • Comfortable presenting and facilitating before groups.

  • Ability to succeed in a fast-moving environment that values an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Expected travel is approximately 20%.
