The Third Annual Young Michigan Filmmakers Festival (YMFF) will take place on Saturday night, August 15, at the Old Art Building in Leland from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. The festival was created to showcase the extraordinary talent of Michigan’s budding young filmmakers. This year there were over 50 films submitted from all over the State of Michigan.

The entry criteria are; filmmakers must be under 25 years of age, currently live in Michigan, and the films cannot exceed 30 minutes in length. Films were submitted via YouTube, Vimeo, or on DVD.

There will be a meet and greet at 5:30 pm with live music and an intermission. The awards reception will immediately follow the film screenings. Awards are presented in the categories of Best Comedy, Best Drama, Best Documentary, Best Animated Film, Best Music Video, Best Experimental/Avant Garde film, Best Film, and the Audience’s Choice Award. A panel of jurors, consisting of industry professionals and film aficionados, has screened the films and the final presentation will be approximately three hours in length. Admission is free, but contributions are greatly appreciated.

Seating in the Old Art Building is limited to 200. The Old Art Building’s W.T Best Theater features HD digital projection and surround-sound capabilities to provide a state-of-the-art big screen experience for the young filmmakers. Schools represented last year were the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Alma College, The College for Creative Studies, Northern Michigan University, Grand Valley State, Mott Community College and Leland High School.

The film festival is sponsored, in part, by the Leelanau Community Cultural Center, Michigan Arts & Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
