On Saturday, October 11, 2014 in downtown Traverse City, keep an eye out for Star Wars Stormtroopers on Front Street. It’s “Star Wars Reads Day” at local bookstore Brilliant Books. This is the third year of the Lucas Films inspired initiative that is all about getting more children and adults reading.

“We are delighted to be bringing Star Wars Reads Day to Traverse City again this year,” says owner Peter Makin. “Each year the event gets bigger, more people attend, and more of those who do are in costume.”

Slated to appear at Brilliant Books are Star Wars Stormtoopers from the 501st Legion, a nationwide organization of costume enthusiasts and Boba Fett, courtesy of Top Comics. There will also be plenty of other surprises, goodies and giveaways throughout the day, especially for those who dress up as their favorite characters. Even the refreshments will be a Star Wars theme! Come and enjoy a Wookie Cookie or some Yoda Soda!

The full Star Wars Reads Day itinerary is as follows:

  • 10–2 pm   Kids crafts; Star Wars inspired snacks and goodies. (Come in costume for prizes and giveaways)
  • 3 pm         Kids Star Wars Costume Contest
  • 4 pm         Kids Star Wars Trivia Contest
  • 5 pm         A reading from William Shakespeare’s Star Wars: Verily, a New Hope
  • 6 pm         Start Wars Trivia Contest

“There will also be books,” Makin notes. “The Star Wars franchise has generated everything from Star Wars cookbooks and Star Wars inspired ‘Owners Manuals’ to Star Wars LEGO, Star Wars Moleskine journals and books on how to make Star Wars inspired paper planes. We’ll have them all. Brilliant Books will be a mecca for Star Wars fans on October 11. It’ll be great fun for young and old alike.”

The event is free and open to the public.
