Celebrate National Trails Day on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT) at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore). National Trails Day encourages all Americans to get outside to celebrate the importance of natural places where you can recreate, breath some fresh air, and experience what nature can offer including inspiration, education, solitude, amazing scenery, and peace of mind. There will be information, activities, and refreshment stops hosted by the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes (FSBD) and Park Rangers along the first segment of the SBHT, which runs from the Dune Climb to Glen Arbor. The event will take place from 11am to 4pm. Parking is available at the Dune Climb, the historic village of Glen Haven, or in Glen Arbor.
The SBHT is a multi-use trail that, when fully completed, will run from the southern edge of Leelanau County through the National Lakeshore, Empire, and Glen Arbor, to Good Harbor Bay, a distance of 27 miles. The next segment to be constructed will be from the Dune Climb to Empire and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014. This trail is handicap accessible and is designed for walkers, runners, skiers, people on bicycles, in wheelchairs, and babies in strollers.
