The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host a public forum entitled “Protect Our Vote” at noon on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in the lower level public meeting room of the Leelanau County Government Center.
The forum will feature an interactive presentation given by LWV Michigan President Judy Karandjeff and Advocacy Vice President Joan Hunault. The presenters will focus on how citizens obtained the right to vote, the importance of this right, the history of voter suppression, then and now, and ways voting can be protected and made more accessible.
Four lucky participants will leave the forum with a gift: a boxed set of the three volume graphic novel “March” by Congressman John Lewis; “The King Years” by Taylor Branch; “The Fight to Vote” by Michael Waldman; or “Give Us the Ballot” by Ari Berman.
The LWV Michigan Protect the Vote project-one of 16 state projects nationwide-is supported by the national League of Women Voters Education Fund. The League of Women Voters, a non-partisan organization of women and men, has worked to register voters for 98 years, since women gained the right to vote with the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1919.
The public is invited. Many people bring a sack lunch.
