Using the landscape around the Old Art Building and the Lake Michigan beach as a motif this 3-day workshop will explore the key aspects involved in making landscape paintings in oil: materials and tools, techniques, and history. Through direct observation we will interpret the landscape and explore how our mark making and use of color develop paintings that are smart, potent, and surprising.  During the workshop we will focus our energy into smaller, energetic paintings, with the goal of building up a series of many paintings rather than one major accomplishment.  Each day will be filled with lectures on contemporary and historic landscape painters, material and painting demonstrations and technical information. We will talk together about how I approach the landscape and explore how you best might do so.  This workshop is open to all levels but some prior painting experience in color mixing is required for the class. Prior experience can be in any medium, but you should have at least the basic knowledge of how to mix simple colors.
