NORTH CENTRAL OFFERS FREE FARMING EDUCATION WORKSHOPS

North Central Michigan College’s Corporate and Community Education (CCE) department is offering free workshops on food, farms and gardens this fall. CCE partners with Crosshatch Center for Art and Ecology to provide farming education in the Northwest Lower Michigan area. Seating is limited and you must register in advance.

On Wednesdays, September 5 – 19 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Dr. Marilynn Smith, expert mycologist, will offer workshops on identifying local edible and poisonous mushrooms. There will be three classroom lectures and three field observations visiting local forested areas.

On Thursday, September 13, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Sierra Bigham, certified herbalist and owner of Bear Earth Herbals will provide insight into trending herbs for potions and tinctures.

On Thursday, September 20, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Wendy Wieland, Michigan State University Extension and Michigan State University Product Center, and Carol Mack-Griffin, from Yaya’s Bakery of Charlevoix, will lead a class designed for those who want to manufacture a food product that is not eligible to be sold under Michigan’s Cottage Food Law. This class is for the entrepreneur and farmers interested in growing their business. Products may include pickles and other vegetables, many sauces like salsa or those with fruit, anything with meat or dairy as an ingredient and many others. Attendees will learn about food safety basics, regulatory requirements and business development resources.
