Fungi are abundant and diverse in Northern Michigan in late summer and fall; they affect our lives and have a major role in all ecosystems. Learn from expert mycologist Marilynn Smithhow to identify local edible and poisonous mushrooms and gain new respect for fungi. Participants will meet in the classroom one night a week for demonstrations and lectures, and then visit local wooded areas to collect fungi samples on weekend afternoon sessions. Instructor Marilynn Smith is a local mycologist who has shared her knowledge and expertise with many citizens in workshops and woodland walks in Michigan. Marilynn has an M. S. from the University of Iowa in mycology and has done research at the University of Vermont and the University of Michigan. She has traveled the world studying mycology and has taught at the high school and college levels.
