McLean & Eakin, Booksellers welcomes author Loren Niewenhuis to sign her book, A 1,000 Mile Great Lakes Walk.
Loreen has always felt connected to the Great Lakes. She decided to explore Lake Michigan fully by walking around it. Her account of this walk- A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach – was released in 2011 and was on the Heartland Indie Bestseller list in 2011 and won “Best Non-Fiction Beach Read” from the Beach Book Festival in 2012.
In 2012, Niewenhuis undertook another 1000-mile hike, this time along the shores of all five Great Lakes. The book about this adventure, A 1000-Mile Great Lakes Walk was published by Crickhollow Books this year.
Niewenhuis grew up in Michigan and has lived here most of her life. She has pursued a life of science, getting a Bachelor, then Master of Science degrees. She has worked in various aspects of the science world including in a hospital laboratory, doing basic animal research, and working with a bone marrow transplant group. While taking a break to raise her young sons, Niewenhuis began writing fiction. This evolved into a passion, and she returned to school to get her Master of Fine Arts from Spalding University. In 2009, her short story collection, Scar Tissue, was a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Award.
