McLean & Eakin Booksellers welcomes children’s author and illustrator Lynn Rae Perkins as our guest for the Petoskey Downtown Holiday Open House. She’ll sign Seed by Seed: The Legend and Legacy of John “Appleseed” Chapman, her first illustrated book by another author – Esme Raji Codell.
Seed by Seed, for ages four and up, revives the legend of Johnny Appleseed telling about his apple tree planting legend, including more about his life and character. In words and pictures, the reader learns about Johnny’s relationship with Native Americans and the pioneers. It shows how his life sets examples of goodness and sharing and about his love of nature and animals.
Perkins, who has illustrated six picture books and three of her own novels, has won numerous awards for her writing and illustrating, including the 2006 Newberry Medal for her book Criss Cross. For Seed by Seed, she researched the life of Johnny Appleseed, learning about his appearance (small, strong with dark hair parted in the middle and a happy demeanor). She wanted her illustrations to be pertinent and authentic to the time period of the late 1700s and early 1800s, and she wanted to show how Johnny Appleseed made a difference in the world “seed by seed.”
Other books Lynn Perkins has written and illustrated include As Easy as Falling on the Face of the Earth, Snow Music, The Cardboard Piano, and Pictures from Our Vacation. She currently lives in Suttons Bay, Michigan.
This is a free in-store event. No reservations are required.
