Log Cabin Day is celebrated statewide on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at historic log cabin sites across Michigan.
The centerpiece of the local observance is the Hessler Log Cabin at Lighthouse Park at the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula. The log cabin is open, with music, historic crafts and demonstrations being featured.
Hours are 11am-3pm, hosted by the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society (OMPHS), the event is free.
Tours of adjacent Mission Point Lighthouse are available. During this event, proceeds from the lighthouse tours are dedicated to the OMPHS.
Nearby, at the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, Lighthouse Friends, in cooperation with the Old Mission Men’s Breakfast Club, offer a Pancake Brunch from 11am-1pm. Pancakes, sausage and eggs are served for a free will offering; proceeds to be used for preservation and restoration of the Mission Point Lighthouse.
In Old Mission, the historic Dougherty Mission House, ice house and restored outhouse are available for viewing. The event is hosted by the Peter Dougherty Society (PDS), there is no charge. During this event, the PDS hold an Ice Cream Social with proceeds to be used to further restoration work on the site. Hours are 11am-4pm.
