Author Signing: PJ Parrish and Peg Herring, mystery writers and authors of Dead of Winter, at Horizon Books.

PJ Parrish has written many books in her Louis Kincaid series. Begin with Dead of Winter, where Officer Louis Kincaid is looking for a refuge. Drawn to the stark serenity of the Michigan wilderness, he thinks he’s found just the place in Loon Lake, gateway to the Winter Wonderland. But behind the facade of pines and gingerbread lurks a killer taking his vengeance. His first victim is a local policeman, shot dead in the middle of the night, a playing card left by his body. Next, facedown and frozen under the ice near the shoreline, another policeman is found dead, another card at his side. Suspicions are rife, the atmosphere increasingly claustrophobic as Kincaid leads the local police force in a desperate bid to protect their own. Scared for his life, frustrated at every turn, Kincaid seems to be a pawn in another man’s plan. But in the hands of a master, the end game can have any number of outcomes.

Peg Herring has written many books as well, in several different series. Her newest series is written under the pen name of Maggie Pill, and begins with The Sleuth Sisters, where recently unemployed Faye Burner talks her retired sister Barbara into opening a detective agency. Their first few months are disappointing, since no one in their small Michigan town believes two fifty-something women can (or should) be private investigators. Faye wants to ask their well-connected sister Retta for help, but Barb insists she’s too bossy to be included in the business. Without telling Barb, Faye lets Retta in on some details when they get their first real case: locating a man accused of murdering his wife and brother-in-law. Retta is helpful, as Faye knew she would be, but since she and Barb are both interested in the town’s handsome new police chief, things become uncomfortable when they’re all in the same room. When the sisters find the man they’re looking for, bad things begin to happen, escalating from scare tactics to assault to murder. Someone doesn’t want the old case stirred up, and that person is willing to kill. If the three Sleuth Sisters don’t learn to work together, they’ll be less one sibling!
