The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society invites you to celebrate the opening of their new temporary exhibit A Shadow Over the Earth: The Life and Death of the Passenger Pigeon on Saturday June 7, 2014! This new exhibit commemorates the centenary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon, which, before its eradication, was one of the most abundant birds in North America. The loss of this amazing bird demonstrates the destructive power of mankind and still influences conservation efforts today.
A Shadow Over the Earth will have on display two rare taxidermy pigeons and their eggs courtesy of the Grand Rapids Public Museum and passenger pigeon bones found in excavations at Fort Michilimackinac courtesy of Mackinac State Historic Parks. The passenger pigeon’s history in Michigan and in the Harbor Springs area will be explored not only through the exhibit but also in several talks at the museum in the coming months.
The exhibit’s opening will be held from 11am to 3 pm on Saturday, June 7, 2014. The event is open to the public and will include free admission and light refreshments.
