Come hear about life in a refugee camp on the island of Lesvos, Greece. Traverse City locals Talia and Zoe Gerstle share their insights from volunteering for 3 months last fall. Talia and Zoe will give an overview of the European refugee crisis and the complexities of its causes and effects. From there they will describe the daily life and relay personal accounts of refugees to paint a picture of the reality of refugees living in a camp in Europe. Talia and Zoe were profoundly impacted seeing the immense challenges of being a refugee—fleeing one’s home, struggling with the legal process, learning a new language and culture, and dealing with a history of trauma, to name a few. Equally moving, however, was the daily beauty that existed in the refugee camp—neighbors working together to create a community that supports and encourages each of its members. The refugee crisis can feel far away from Traverse City, but Talia and Zoe intend to bring the lessons they learned and stories they heard a little closer to home.
