EMU/Oliver Art Center Artist in Residency Pop-Up Exhibition
Earlier this year, Oliver Art Center announced an Artist in Residency program in partnership with Eastern Michigan University’s Jean Noble Parson’s Center. The Center sits on 86 acres of natural woodland and marsh, with Parsons Lake in the center. The Center is the legacy of the late Jean Parsons, renowned sculptor and potter, and is run by the College of Arts & Sciences with special attention from the School of Art & Design and the departments of Psychology and Biology.
The first artist selected for the program was Susan Thompson, an artist living in Lake Ann. The scholar/artist’s role was to complete a project relevant to the interdisciplinary mission of Parsons. This unique experience allows the scholar/artist to explore new dimensions in their discipline in a serene and remote environment. “This collaboration is a terrific opportunity to not only join forces with a larger institution, but also to bring attention to the natural beauty of Northern Michigan and to promote one of the many different opportunities for creative individuals there are in the area,” said Mercedes Michalowski, Oliver Art Center Executive Director.
Susan’s residency took place in April over the course of two weeks. The Pop-Up Exhibition will feature the works of art she created while conducting the residency. The exhibition will open on Saturday, June 2 with an opening reception from 2p-4p and run through June 14. Susan will also give an artist talk about her work and experiences on Saturday, June 9 from 2pm-3pm.
The Oliver Art Center exhibit and Mary’s Gift Gallery will be open to the public Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sun. 12 p.m. -4 p.m. Please visit www.oliverartcenterfrankfort.org or contact 231-352-4151 for more information.
