CTAC School of Ballet Presents: “Sleeping Beauty”~
On June 8 and 9, Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet students will present “Sleeping Beauty” at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center.
The Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet production of “Sleeping Beauty” is a re-imagining of the classic fairy tale. Artistic Director Heather Raue and teacher/choreographer Karrie Benedict have based this year’s ballet on the Grimm Brothers’ interpretation of this story. Their version has the princess falling under an evil spell, only to be revived 100 years later, finding herself in modern times. The re-imagining comes in the form of the ballet’s time period – Raue and Benedict have elected to set the story in 1900, with the princess waking up in the year 2000. Act One starts in a time when most homes were still lit by gas lamps; Act Two picks up during a time when cityscapes and electricity light the night sky.
The music, choreography, costumes, and set pieces will reflect this dramatic time span in Western civilization, giving the students the opportunity to perform an array of dance styles while telling a beloved story that originated in Germany hundreds of years ago.
Over 175 dancers, from Beginning Ballet up to Pre-Professional Ballet, will take the stage amidst music that reflects the time period, and choreography which promises to delight and awaken the viewers’ senses.
