CTAC’s 2018-19 Performing Arts Series concludes with Celtic band, Blackthorn

On Saturday, March 2, 2019, Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Performing Arts Series concludes with Celtic band Blackthorn taking the stage at 7:30 p.m.

A five-man band, Blackthorn features traditional Celtic songs of emigration, sea shanties, and lively jigs and reels, combined with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that takes audiences on a journey around the Emerald Isle. Capturing the history and legend of Ireland and its people, bandmates Richard McMullan, Fred Klein, Gary McMullen, Dennis Green, and David Mosher use multiple instruments and a tight blend of four-part harmony, coupled with a variety of tunes, tempos, and textures, to weave a rich tapestry of Celtic music.

Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Richard McMullan loves to share the stories and songs of his native land with audiences. He sings lead vocal and plays guitar, mandolin, cittern, bodhran, and bones.

Firmly grounded in Celtic music, Fred Klein also brings an extensive musical background to the stage, having played variations of rock and jazz throughout his career. Klein plays keyboards, tin whistle, wooden flute, and accordion.

Gary McMullen’s musical background is best described as covering the full spectrum of American and Celtic folk music, with special emphasis on Bluegrass music. McMullen plays guitar and 5-string banjo.

Dennis Green’s background includes choral and vocal group training as well as many years of performing in traditional and contemporary folk music ensembles. He plays bass guitar.

A full time musician since 1988, David Mosher is well known throughout the Midwest in the folk, bluegrass, and Celtic music scenes. He plays anything with strings on it, but primarily mandolin and fiddle.

Based out of Detroit, Blackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. They frequently perform at concert halls, universities, and festivals, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest. Blackthorn can also be regularly found at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley.

They have released seven CDs, and performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times.

Blackthorn is an adjudicated performer of the Michigan Humanities Council and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

Don’t miss this talented group as they bring the songs and music of Ireland to Northern Michigan. Tickets are $25 for CTAC Members, $35 for Non-Members, and $10 for students. Before the performance and during intermission, please enjoy beverages at the cash bar.
