Center Gallery opens its 2014 season May 23 with the “Color of Light,” work by two artists in paint and porcelain. Ann Arbor ceramist Elizabeth Lurie and Maple City painter Carol Spaulding both draw on the world of flowers, vegetables and other plant forms for their work. A reception for this show is May 30, 6 p.m. at the gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.
Lurie’s hand- built and thrown porcelain teapots, sugar sets, trays, bowls and vases are influenced by the Japanese Oribe aesthetic — shapes are abstracted from nature. Delicately patterned and white, minimally-glazed surfaces are Lurie’s signature style.
Spaulding looks to her home garden, as well as the local landscape, for her subjects. Her bright, happy floral bouquets are interpretations of what she sees in the backyard and fields. Spaulding paints in oil and gouache paints.
As part of the exhibition, Spaulding will conduct a painting demonstration at Center Gallery, June 8, 1 p.m.
This exhibition continues through June 26. For more information please call 231/334-3179.
