A royal wedding. An Oscar winning movie “The King’s Speech.” Britain has been on our minds this year. The Erickson Center for the Arts and “Curtis Buckeyes” (former Ohio residents now residing in the Curtis area) presents a classical chamber music program of music by English composers and one piece about England. The program is entitled “Hail Brittania” and will take place on Monday, August 22nd at 7:00 p.m at the Erickson Center in Curtis. Kaycee Ware Thomas, vocalist and oboist joins violinists Paul Lundinand Karen Jenks, violist Joe Deller and cellist Dan Thomas in a concert celebrating English nationalism. Ms. Thomas will start the program with Samuel Barber’s setting of a Malcolm Arnold poem for String Quartet and Voice entitled “Dover Beach.” She will then pick up her oboe and play the exotic Arthur Bliss “Quintet for Oboe and Strings.” After intermission it is Frank Bridge’s arrangements of English Folk tunes for String Quartet and then the light and summer-like Arnold Bax String Quartet in G Major to finish the evening. The Bliss and the Bax compositions both utilize traditional English folk melodies. Both composers also held the post “Master of the Queen’s Music.” Although the composers on this concert are unfamiliar to many, this music will be a discovery of the unexpected. Free admission, however, donations are appreciated.
