On a dim winter afternoon, a young Irish immigrant opens the gas taps in his Brooklyn tenement. In the aftermath of the fire that follows, an aging nun appears, to direct the way forward for his widow, Annie, and unborn child. In order to make money, Annie takes a job doing laundry at the nun’s convent. In turn, the nuns help raise her daughter, Sally, after she is born. This novel by Alice McDermott follows two families through three generations and poses the questions of how much we owe others, how much we owe ourselves, and how much we owe God.
