The Big Draw-Grand Traverse returns in October 2016 with all new activities for everyone! Partners include the Dennos Museum Center, Blackbird Arts, SCRAP TC, Oliver Art Center, Grass River Natural Area, Jordan River Arts Council, Great Lakes Children’s Museum, Traverse Area District Library, SEEDS and The Little Fleet.

Oliver Art Center is partnering with Benzie Shores Library in Frankfort to bring an interactive card catalog drawing project to the community.  Beginning October 1, participants can come to either location, choose one or more catalog cards (from the retired card catalog) and do a responsive drawing on the card.  Drawing supplies will be provided on site and finished drawings will be displayed in the North end of the entry hallway at Oliver Art Center. All ages are invited to participate.

The Frankfort High School art class is also participating by repurposing catalog cards.  A selection of their projects will be also be displayed at OAC.

The Big Draw, hosted by the Campaign for Drawing, happens across the United Kingdom and in twenty other countries, with thousands of people expected to join in over one thousand events. The Big Draw offers enjoyable, and mainly free, drawing activities which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators – and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can’t!

The Campaign for Drawing is an independent charity launched in 2000 by the Guild of St George to commemorate its founder, the great Victorian writer, philosopher and artist, John Ruskin. The Campaign raises the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement, creating a new regard for the value of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action.

Parking at Oliver Art Center is limited. Overflow parking can be found along the east side of Second Street, which leads to Oliver Art Center, as well as on Main Street. Parking is prohibited in the adjacent lots of Harbor Lights, The United States Coast Guard Station, and at other condominiums.

The Oliver Art Center exhibit will be open to the public Mon.-Fri. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sun. 12 p.m.-4 p.m. Mary’s Gift Gallery is open all year round, during normal gallery hours. Please visit www.oliverartcenterfrankfort.org or contact 231-352-4151 for more information.
