Mystery, Magic and Music in Musical Theatre Concert — July 27
BAY VIEW, MI – On Wednesday, July 27, experience one of Bay View Music Festival’s most popular annual chamber music concerts—Mystery, Magic and Music: A Night at the Opera. Bay View’s talented voice and collaborative piano faculty join together to present a collection of arias, duets, trios and powerful ensembles rich with the dramatic flair of the original multi-media art form. The concert will take place at 8:00 p.m. in Hall Auditorium, 1715 Encampment Ave., Petoskey, Michigan. All are welcome and tickets start at just $13.50 with free admission for those under age 18.
The evening’s program will include selections from a range of opera genres including a piece from La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker)—considered both an opera seria (serious opera) and opera semiseria for its comedic and tragic elements—by Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini; “Overture” from the famed opera buffa (comic opera) The Barber of Seville by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini who also composed “La Cenerentola (Cinderella)”; and Franz Lehar’s operetta (light opera) The Merry Widow, which is based on a comedic play about a poor grand duke’s plan to arrange a marriage between his country’s richest widow and a count in order to save the country from economic disaster.
Also featured are excerpts from Gaetano Donizetti’s Anna Bolena; Charles Gounod’s timeless Romeo et Juliette; German composer Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, based on William Shakespeare’s comedic play of the same name; as well as arias, duets and trios from musical masters such as Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Beethoven.
