HOPE, SACRIFICE, AND GREAT SONGS ABOUND ON JULY 24
BAY VIEW, MI – On Sunday, July 24, Bay View Music Festival pays Tribute to the Greatest Generation with an inspirational evening of music celebrating an entire generation who embodied the greater good and self-sacrifice. Jazz standards made popular by Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, and Rosemary Clooney will be intermingled with music of the 1940’s and 1950’s significant in the context of history, making this an educational experience to share with the whole family. The concert will take place at 8:00 p.m. in Hall Auditorium, 1715 Encampment Ave., Petoskey, Michigan. All are welcome and tickets start at just $16.50 with free admission for those under age 18.
Returning by popular demand for the third year in a row, the concert pays tribute to the memories of those who fought in, or made material contribution to World War II, as well as those who today continue to fight so that others may live in freedom. A history lesson and patriotic salute in musical form, selections include Doris Day’s hit “Sentimental Journey,” which became the unofficial homecoming theme for many veterans. This will be followed by a Franz Schubert piano duo inspired by Myra Hess who, when all other concert halls blacked out at night to avoid being targets of German bombers, organized some 1,700 lunchtime concerts. Other repertoire include a piece from Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, whose music was periodically banned by Stalin’s oppression for being too formalist and not supportive enough of Russia; newer works from composer Jean-Philippe Calvin whose research seeks to rediscover much of the music and influence abolished in the Holocaust; and timeless favorites such as Rogers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific.
This concert is part of the Summer Sunset Vespers Series—an ongoing tradition that has evolved into a magnificently eclectic concert series featuring a blend of returning faculty and talented newcomers, all seamlessly woven together for an enriching evening of virtuosic, recognizable, or instantly accessible chamber music, songs, and instrumental solos for the whole family. The Bay View Music Festival runs from June 19 through August 18, and features pop, jazz, classical, chamber music, and theatrical productions throughout the summer on the campus just outside of Petoskey.
Tickets start at just $16.50 (Free admission for those under age 18) and can be purchased by calling 800-596-1027 or going on line. For those wanting to purchase in person, Box Office hours are 8:30am-2:30pm at Voorhies Hall, Monday through Sunday and one hour before ticketed events at the performance venue.
