TRAVERSE CITY: Area runners, athletes and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to join the June 17-18, 2016 Summer Solstice Run. This through-the-night,40-mile ultra-run will raise awareness and funds for the international development nonprofit On the Ground, which supports sustainable development in farming regions across the world. The run begins at sunset from the northernmost point of Leelanau County and continues south through the night to the beaches of West Grand Traverse Bay. New this year, there will also be a Sunrise 10K which will allow even more members of our community to join in the solstice celebration. There are also opportunities and incentives for socially engaged runners to go the extra mile and raise additional funds for On the Ground’s program work.
“What started out as a just-for-the-fun-of-it adventure between four running friends has turned into an event in which anyone can participate,” shares Norm Plumstead, On the Ground’s board chairman. “A running adventure for a great cause–I can’t think of a better reason to run. Each time it’s been an amazing experience.”
“Six years ago, I had an idea that it would be exciting to run all night on the summer solstice,” says run founder Hans Voss. “Three of us did and it was an amazing adventure. Each year since we’ve attracted more people. And, now it’s even better because we are running for a really good cause.”
Run entry fees and funds raised will support On the Ground’s ongoing program work in communities like the disenfranchized Mayan farming village of Morrelos in Chiapas, Mexico; or in El Colorado, Nicaragua, home to the all-female coffee farming cooperative Las Diosas; or in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, where countless husbands and wives are participating in gender-equity training.
