Event Details
The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in its By Hand project. On April 20, musicians Martha Meek and Laura Hood will talk about the value and joy of making music by hand. Meek is the director of the Martha Meek Music Studio in Suttons Bay. Hood teaches music, and chairs The Leelanau School art department. The program begins at 1 pm.
Contemporary music is often about consuming, rather than creating, and more often the result of digital enhancements and electronic additions. In this program Meek and Hood will talk about what happens in the brain when people make music, how playing an instrument – whether stringed, brass or produced with the vocal chords – enhances and enriches life. A group of Leelanau School music students will also take part in the discussion, and talk about their experience as hand music makers.
This By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30, and comprises a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations.

Musical portraits by celebrated composers will transport you to the distant regions of the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Southern Europe and more in this smorgasbord-concert of distinct musical cultures.
The concert will present works such as Mozart’s Abduction from Seraglio and Turkish March, Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers, Turina’s Five Gypsy Dances, and Sibelius’ incidental score for the play Belshazzar’s Feast.
The highlight of the concert is Marcus Paus’ Portrait of Zhou for Flute and Orchestra. Paus is the most prominent contemporary Norwegian composer of our time known for promoting works that are influenced by folk music and non-Western classical music, in this case Chinese music.
GLCO is proud to welcome an award-winning flutist Nancy Stagnitta. Nancy is a leading crossover artist as both classical flutist and jazz artist. Her passion, versatility, and elegant artistry have led to concert engagements in Africa, Europe, Asia, and across the U.S. In 2018, she gave the Asian premier of David Amram’s Giants of the Night Flute Concerto with the China National Symphony in Beijing.

🥣🎨 Why is Empty Bowls our favorite event? It’s more than just a gathering—it’s a heartwarming experience that brings our community together in so many ways:
👩🎨 Artists: Creative minds come together to craft beautiful bowls, each one a masterpiece filled with love and purpose.
🎶 Entertainers: Our event is not just about food; it’s about creating memories. New this year, inspired by the first Empty Bowls event held by a high school art class in Southeast Michigan over 34 years ago, the Coalition is partnering with area artists to provide live demonstrations and art available for purchase. Local entertainment will be showcased – including a presentation by Michael Sincic, a local watercolor artist who is blind.
🍽️ Restaurateurs: Local restaurants generously donate their delicious soups, showcasing the culinary talent of our community.
💙 Donors and Ticket Holders: Your support keeps our mission alive. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in the lives of those in need. The cost for the event is $27 in advance or $33 at the door for adults, children 6-13 is $15, and children 5 and under are free.
🙋♀️ Volunteers: Dedicated individuals who lend their time and effort to ensure the success of our event and our mission everyday, spreading kindness with every gesture.
🌾 By supporting Empty Bowls, you’re not only helping your neighbors in need – including veterans, seniors, children, and families; but you’re also backing our local farmers. With your support, we’re able to invest in fresh, locally sourced produce and proteins, keeping our funds within the farm community and supporting family farmers.
📅 Mark your calendars for April 28, from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m. at Howe Arena and join us for a day filled with compassion, connection, and delicious food. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and continue to spread love throughout our community.
See you there! 🌟

The Mammals House Concert
Thursday, May 02, 2024 • 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EDT
Gopherwood House Concert
The Mammals lush 2020 album “Nonet” featured nine musicians and was “nothing short of sublime” according to Americana UK, bringing “the defiant spirit needed to heal a damaged world” as reported by No Depression Magazine. In 2022 the band is honored and thrilled to be performing these songs – and even newer ones – for live audiences.
Dynamic range is a hallmark of any concert by The Mammals. The quintet ensemble effortlessly spans the horizons of Americana, from soulfully harmonized indie-folk ballads to zealous fiddle and banjo-driven foot stompers.
The band’s core and founders Mike Merenda & Ruth Ungar write songs to heal hearts and rouse minds. They have recorded and performed together for two decades, as the duo Mike + Ruthy and with The Mammals. They make their home in the lush Hudson River Valley of New York where they host a thriving community folk festival called The Hoot.
Mike Merenda’s poignant lyrics paint pictures of the world we want to live in, inspired in great part by his favorite author, Daniel Quinn. With songs like “What It All Is”, and “Beyond Civilization”, his songs embrace the notion that we are all connected, to each other and to the Earth.
Ruth Ungar was raised in a folk music family and learned the fiddle at a young age. Her father is fiddler/composer Jay Ungar, known for his composition Ashokan Farewell which the band performs. She’s a courageous, earthy singer with deep roots in tradition, contributing songs of unity and empathy like “Someone’s Hurting” and “East Side West Side.”
A 2019 tour of the UK prompted this concert review from Celtic Music Radio:
“Hailed by many as Americana trailblazers, Ruth Ungar and Mike Merenda, happily married and exuding togetherness on stage, are also gently-mannered activists with well-crafted songs that successfully ask potent questions of politicians and raise issues to probe how we can improve the planet. They deliver their material persuasively and in an eloquent manner with enjoyment of their music underpinning the approach overall. The music is the motivator throughout.”
This show will take place in the home of Paul and Nancy Brown. Feel free to bring your own beverage and snacks. Tickets for this show are limited. Gopherwood recommends you get your tickets early.

CARMINA BURANA | ORGAN SYMPHONY
This concert is a true community masterpiece presenting 120 local artists spanning 4 generations!
The performance includes two masterworks and audience favorites, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and Organ Symphony by Saint Saens. Featured performers include distinguished artists of the Bay View Chautauqua Music Festival, GLCO Orchestra and Chorus, Little Traverse Choral Society led by Andre Strydom, and Harbor Springs Children ’s Choir led by Amy Cross, coming together at the historic John M. Hall Auditorium in Bay View.
This is a unique opportunity to hear these masterpieces as they both require a large performance force and thus are not presented very often. Carmina Burana was last performed in our community over a decade ago and is fondly remembered by our residents to this day. The Saint Saens’ Organ Symphony is one of the rare works that incorporates the “King of the instruments” into the fabric of the score. The organ at the John M. Hall Auditorium is a majestic instrument by Pilcher with all the stops at the disposal to recreate the soundscape of the Organ Symphony masterfully performed by a virtuoso organist Kelly Hale.

Step back in time at the Port Oneida Fair and experience life as it was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Imagine the life of the pioneers as you help bale hay or watch a broom-maker at work. Learn about spinning, basket weaving, soap making, butter making, candle dipping, and fur trapping. Listen as park rangers and local history experts share the area’s history. Watch as teams of oxen and horses cut, load, and haul hay and artists and craftsmen demonstrate their skills.
Arrive anytime between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. Most people spend 3-4 hours at the fair.
All programs are free with a valid park entrance pass. Passes may be purchased at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire, Michigan, and cost $25 (per vehicle) for seven days, $45 for an annual Sleeping Bear Dunes pass, or $80 (or less) for the America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands pass series.
