Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week class that runs from April 13 through June 15 on Thursday evenings along with a full day Mindfulness Retreat on Saturday June 3.
MBSR is an evidence-based, well -researched program that offers secular intensive mindfulness training to assist people with a host of stress-related physical, emotional and psychological conditions. Along with ongoing practice throughout the week, this class trains attention and cultivates awareness, providing one with positive coping tools needed to become strong and resilient in both body and mind.
MBSR is a psychoeducational and highly experiential in nature. In addition to didactic teaching, classes are interactive and dynamic, using a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness, yoga and the exploration of patterns of behavior, thinking, feeling and action. The MBSR program helps us become aware of our habitual patterns of reacting and the self-agency to interrupt this cycle and create more choice in our life. MBSR offers us the potential to relate to ourselves, our experiences and the world around us with fresh perspectives and in new and more meaningful ways.
This is a hybrid class being offered both in-person and online via Zoom and each MBSR session includes:
An Orientation (1 hour)
8 – MBSR Class Sessions (2 ½ hours ea.)
Full Day Silent Mindfulness Retreat
Free Online Guided Meditations
MBSR was founded by Jon Kabat Zinn in 1979 out of the University of Massachusetts. Since then, there has been a tremendous amount of research coming out of U-Mass, Harvard, Brown, UCLA, Stanford, UW-Madison and numerous other institutions around the world providing insight into, not only how MBSR positively benefits the body and mind, but also how it changes the structure and function of the brain through positive neuroplasticity.

This evidenced-based practice, deeply rooted in psychology, science and Far Eastern practices, has over 40 years of research and neuroscience demonstrating the profound ability to positively impact the health and well-being of body and mind. Over 1000 studies have shown that regular practice and mindful living can enhance attention, focus and memory, decrease symptoms of anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, decrease self-harming and addictive behaviors, increase emotional stability and balance, improve mood and optimism, improve communication, social and relational skills, decrease the risk for disease, and reduce symptoms of diseases of both body and mind – enhancing overall immunity.
You will find a plethora of this research at the American Mindfulness Research Association www.goamra.org
Viktor Frankl, a Psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, explains how mindfulness teaches us to pause and bring moment to moment awareness to our thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations in the face of unpleasant stimuli; permitting us to calmly choose to respond thoughtfully instead of simply reacting habitually to life’s inevitable challenges. Most of us, are unaware of this space “between stimulus and response” because we get caught in our habitual patterns of reacting to life.
“Between stimulus and response there’s a space, in that space lies our power to choose our response, in our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Victor Frankl

Local businesses, volunteers, community members, and county officials have joined efforts to bring a healthy
family event to the village of Lake Ann.
Join us for The Inaugural Lake Ann 5K run/walk which will benefit a U.S. Marine Veteran, Erik Florip and his family with medical finances. We are gathering as community to provide support to a local family. We hope to continue this event year after year to benefit a local family or cause in need of assistance.
The event will include a pre-race event with music and photo opportunities. After the race, join everyone at Lake
Ann Brewing for live music and celebration with our community.
We have a 5K that will start in beautiful downtown Lake Ann highlighting the village, neighborhoods, and scenic
view of Lake Ann as you finish downhill on Maple Ave and return to the start on First Street.
Registration includes a race t-shirt and medals for top 3 in each age group. Plaque will be awarded to overall male and female winners and male and female masters winners.

Escape the daily grind and head to the beautiful Michigan countryside of Hanson Hills Recreation Area, just one hour from Traverse City on June 23-24, 2023.
Your team will take turns running over two days and one night, relay-style, on three smooth, single-track trails perfect for any runner experience level. You’ll run on lush forested pine and maple paths, over rolling hills with scenic bluff overviews. At night, let a billion stars overhead (and your headlamp, of course) light your way along the trails.
When you’re not running, you’ll be partying with your team and other runners at Ragnar Village. Think campfire stories, s’mores, music and even time to roll out those sore legs.
Round up a team of your most adventurous friends for a nature-fueled challenge that will give you memories to last a lifetime.
NEW this year – All the best of Ragnar Trail, packed into a single day. Don’t want to do the whole overnight thing? Join us for the Trail Sprint version of this race. Same weekend! Same place. Learn more HERE.

TART Trails & Up North Pride are coming together to host the first-ever Rainbow Run, a color fun run and fundraiser around the Boardman Lake Loop Trail. To celebrate the trail systems and the Northern Michigan 2SLGBTQ+ Community during Pride Month, the event, on June 24, 2023, will invite the community to join together at Hull Park to enjoy music and refreshments before and after the run.
The run/walk route will take participants counterclockwise around the 4-mile Boardman Lake Loop Trail. There will be five distinct and separated stations along the route for participants to receive their colors. All participants who register by June 9th will receive a branded white t-shirt. We will be using a powder made of colored cornstarch that will be human, fish, and environment-friendly and will wash out after a rain to have no long-lasting effects on the park or City infrastructure. The trail will stay open for public use so please be kind to other trail users.
We will gather at Hull Park for music, refreshments, and community activities like lawn games after the event. All of the events at Hull Park will be open to the public.
