Event Details
Help us restore and protect the sensitive dune ecosystem of Maple Bay! This popular beach destination provides habitat for rare native species, and we need your help to keep the dune healthy. Come on out to help us install fencing on the dune to guide human use and limit the trampling of these special plants.
The Basics:
GTRLC will supply gloves, tools, and water. Our team will teach you everything you need to know about tool use, safety, and fence installation. No prior experience is necessary – just come ready to learn something new! Be sure to sign in at registration when you arrive. This activity is moderately strenuous, with volunteers often bending and kneeling to install fencing. It will be about a mile hike to get to our worksite. A porta john is available for use at the trailhead of this property.
The Conservancy follows state, federal and CDC guidelines for COVID-19 and may modify or cancel this event at any time. Do not participate in any activity if you were recently exposed (within 10 days) to someone with COVID-19 or have recently (within 10 days) been diagnosed with COVID-19.
What we recommend bringing:
- Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes that can handle some mud
- a reusable water bottle and some snacks
- Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort
- A pair of work gloves
Location: Please meet us at the trailhead of Maple Bay Natural Area.
Registration is appreciated but is not required. Cancellations due to weather, changing COVID-19 restrictions, or any other reason will be communicated with registered participants via email.
Thank you for your interest in joining us! If you have any questions, please contact Erica DesJardins at edesjardins@gtrlc.org or 231-929-7911 (ext. 316).

On May 17, we invite you to join us to celebrate ten years of transformative youth bike programming and community engagement at the City Opera House. Through a powerful short film, “A Decade in Motion”, shot throughout 2023 by Mark Goethel, we invite you to see how our work positively impacts the lives of riders of all ages and abilities. It is likely that you will see your child, your neighbor, a local teacher, or yourself in the film – You are Norte!
This event is truly a celebration of you, our coaches, donors, and volunteers and our shared journey over the last ten years. Your dedication and support have shaped what Norte is today. Thank you for sharing our passion for happy, healthy, strong kids and communities. We couldn’t do this without you, nor would we want to.
Join us as we celebrate “A Decade in Motion.”

Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve for another Unusual Spring Experience!
On Thursday, April 4 at 4 pm, discover firsthand the impact this year’s fluctuating weather patterns are having on our local wildlife as our knowledgeable land steward, Steve Lagerquist, leads you along the universally accessible Looyenga Family Trail.
Plus, stick around after the excursion for an exclusive tour of the buildings and grounds at Mitchell Creek Meadows. Starting at 5 p.m., we’ll take you behind the scenes of the McMullen Family Conservation Center, the Bob and Pauline Young Family Stewardship Workshop, the native plant greenhouse, and the goat barn. On the tour, you will learn about the extensive sustainable features throughout the facilities and how this new hub for conservation is shaping land protection and stewardship efforts in our communities.
If you can’t make it on Thursday, don’t worry! We have additional tours of the facilities lined up for Saturday, May 18, at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, June 11, at 5 p.m.
Remember, space is limited and registration is required, so be sure to register HERE for each event separately. Any updates or changes will be communicated to registered attendees via email.

Save the dates for the 2024 Plein Air Weekend which will be held Friday, August 2 and Saturday August 3. More info HERE.
Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” (Courtesy of Artists Network)
