No one fights to preserve a multiplex, but some people will risk everything to save a marquee. Through booms and busts, Delft Theatres Inc. – and its innovative gem, The Nordic – endured in Marquette Michigan for almost 100 years, even as the world changed endlessly around them. Local kid Bernie Rosendahl’s modern crusade to restore the historic arthouse to its former glory leads filmmakers to discover a hidden cinema empire in the Upper Peninsula.
Portraying the fascinating history of motion pictures through one iconic screen – and featuring dozens of real-life Marquette locations and characters – Marqueetown is the true story of chasing your dreams, redefining failure and success, and reembracing the enduring magic of cinema.
Written and Directed by Joseph Beyer and Jordan Anderson
Based on the work of Bernie Rosendahl
Executive Producers Kathleen Glynn ands Diana Milock
Associate Producers Terry Lynn Carrithers, Ward and Mary Gillette, Kathleen Verduin, Joe and Katie Anderson.
Original Score by Andrew Dost

🥣🎨 Why is Empty Bowls our favorite event? It’s more than just a gathering—it’s a heartwarming experience that brings our community together in so many ways:
👩🎨 Artists: Creative minds come together to craft beautiful bowls, each one a masterpiece filled with love and purpose.
🎶 Entertainers: Our event is not just about food; it’s about creating memories. New this year, inspired by the first Empty Bowls event held by a high school art class in Southeast Michigan over 34 years ago, the Coalition is partnering with area artists to provide live demonstrations and art available for purchase. Local entertainment will be showcased – including a presentation by Michael Sincic, a local watercolor artist who is blind.
🍽️ Restaurateurs: Local restaurants generously donate their delicious soups, showcasing the culinary talent of our community.
💙 Donors and Ticket Holders: Your support keeps our mission alive. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in the lives of those in need. The cost for the event is $27 in advance or $33 at the door for adults, children 6-13 is $15, and children 5 and under are free.
🙋♀️ Volunteers: Dedicated individuals who lend their time and effort to ensure the success of our event and our mission everyday, spreading kindness with every gesture.
🌾 By supporting Empty Bowls, you’re not only helping your neighbors in need – including veterans, seniors, children, and families; but you’re also backing our local farmers. With your support, we’re able to invest in fresh, locally sourced produce and proteins, keeping our funds within the farm community and supporting family farmers.
📅 Mark your calendars for April 28, from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m. at Howe Arena and join us for a day filled with compassion, connection, and delicious food. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and continue to spread love throughout our community.
See you there! 🌟

On May 4, the GAAC will host a panel discussion of generative artificial intelligence, and its incursion into the arts. Visual artists Randy Melick, Tim Nielsen, Rufus Snoddy, and writer Bob Butz will talk about the role of AI in their work. The discussion begins at 1 pm and is facilitated by Anne Stanton, National Writers Series executive director, and Sarah Bearup-Neal, GAAC gallery manager.
It is often asserted that AI is just a tool. In the May 4 discussion, the panel will explore a range of questions including their experience with AI, and weigh in on whether or not it’s a benign “tool.” Is AI art “art”? How does AI change the way we understand the visual and literary arts? What purpose does AI serve in the arts? What’s the purpose of turning over human creative work to a machine? What are the harms? Melick and Snoddy are both visual art instructors at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. Nielsen, former president of Nielsen Design Group, Traverse City, and is a studio practitioner. Butz worked for 20 years as a freelance writer. He is now the Senior Creative Copywriter and Creative Strategist for the Wisconsin-based Vortex Optics.
This By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30, and comprises a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations.

What comes to mind when you think of the word Inheritance? Often it is something tangible which is passed down through the ages from loved ones, a piece of property such as a family farm? Perhaps it could be a job or position in your community? How about your dimples, or your freckles? Is what you have inherited a blessing or a curse? Could it be a treasured possession such as your grandmother’s favorite jewelry which now holds great sentimental value to you? Maybe you inherited your sunny disposition from your father, while inheriting your mother’s beautiful singing voice? How are we tied to these things, and how will we pass them on? How do we keep it and honor it?
The Art & Storytelling event is one evening only, however the Artwork for the show is on display at the gallery from May 10th-June 1st.

Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” (Courtesy of Artists Network)

Step back in time at the Port Oneida Fair and experience life as it was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Imagine the life of the pioneers as you help bale hay or watch a broom-maker at work. Learn about spinning, basket weaving, soap making, butter making, candle dipping, and fur trapping. Listen as park rangers and local history experts share the area’s history. Watch as teams of oxen and horses cut, load, and haul hay and artists and craftsmen demonstrate their skills.
