Join Dolly Smith, member of Ikebana International Organization of Traverse City, for a two-hour hands-on workshop to learn this traditional craft. Dolly will demonstrate and assist you in making a beautiful seasonal Ikebana arrangement.

In Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, blossoms, branches, leaves, and stems find new life as materials for art making. In contrast to the western habits of casually placing flowers in a vase, Ikebana aims to bring out the inner qualities of flowers and other live materials and express emotion. This workshop will focus on 2 variations of Ikebana called Ikenobo Moribana and Ikenobo Free Style, as well as skill building.

Each participant will get to take home a completed arrangement. Includes all flower materials, and kenzan (needle holder). A container will be supplied, however you may bring a low flat bowl container (approx. 9″ wide by 2″ deep) that is round, rectangle or oval if you choose. Dolly will choose a floral arrangement design for the class based on the available materials of the season. Student will need to bring floral clippers, pruning shears, and a low box to take your arrangement home in.

Instructor Bio

Dolly Smith has been studying Ikebana for over 20 years and has received the level of Ikenobo/Junkakyo Instructor 3rd Grade. She lives in Traverse City Michigan and is the current President of Traverse City Ikebana International Chapter #165. Images below are examples of Dolly’s work.

We know that a five-day workshop is difficult to work into a person’s work schedule, but Joe Haske’s program is for the writer dedicated to creating a novel that meets the standards of reputable publishers. You won’t want to miss it.

Development of a Novel from the Fearless Standpoint will run from Monday through Friday, October 9 – 13, from 10.m. to 4 p.m., with Wednesday as a day off to concentrate on homework. This even is hosted at the Hessel School House, an iconic historical school house located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula – an ideal setting for creativity and inspiration. During this workshop award-winning literary writer and educator Joseph D. Haske will cover a broad selection of topics including: Book Proposals, Origins of Originality, Plot Lines, Chapters vs. Stories, Sense of Place, Your Vision, Your System, Frame & Form, and The Benefits of Criticism, and Aphorism. The class concludes with a group reading.

ABOUT JOSEPH D. HASKE

National award-winning author, Joseph D. Haske, is Director of the Avery Learning Center Writers Program, which he helped launch in 2018 with 3-day workshops for new and established writers. He is flying in from Texas specifically to present this in-depth workshop designed for the writer who wants to fulfill his/her intense desire to publish a literary work of novel length.

Joe is currently the English Department chair and professor at South Texas College in McAllen, Texas. He was awarded the Boulevard Emerging Fiction Writer Award in 2011, and his debut novel, North Dixie Highway, was released in October of 2013. His fiction has appeared in prestigious journals such as Boulevard, Fiction International, The Texas Review, the Four-Way Review, Pleiades, and in the Chicago Tribune 39’s literary supplement, Printers Row. His poetry and fiction are also featured in various anthologies as well as in French, Romanian, and Canadian publications.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Eran Rhodzell is the founder of Sacred Earth Initiative an organization dedicated to bring about social and environmental transformation and healing through education, advocacy, and implementation of low-maintenance, high-yielding, nature-based edible and medicinal landscapes on both macro and micro levels. Eran graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington with a degree in Sustainable Agriculture. He spent a decade living and working on many different organic farms in locations ranging from Kauai to California to Nova Scotia, before settling on the 68 acres he now calls home in rural Benzie County, Michigan.
