VESSELS
Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC]
August 26 – October 27, 2022
Online application period: March 14 through July 13, 2022 at midnight
The Glen Arbor Arts Center seeks 2D and 3D submissions for its upcoming VESSELS exhibition, August 26-October 27, 2022. A prospectus about the exhibition is online: glenaborart.org/ARTISTS. An online application is available beginning March 14.
Vessels are containers in which things can be carried, and/or moved from one place to another, either literally or metaphorically. For instance: A vessel can be vase; or a container ship; or a person who has a particular quality, or who is used for a particular purpose. Or this: Boxes can be cardboard; or they can be situational, e.g. being boxed in/trapped. Or, this: Baskets go to market; or become a metaphor for sorting and organizing. Seeking work that interprets vessels in innovative and fresh ways, and demonstrates out-of-the-box thinking about vessels and their form, function, and meaning.
Deborah Cholewicki, a Lansing fiber artist working in sculptural forms, will jury the exhibit. Three cash prizes will be awarded. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org.

ON THE PRECIPICE
Glen Arbor Arts Center Lobby Gallery
April 29 – August 11, 2022
The Glen Arbor Arts Center is showing On The Precipice, a collaborative exhibition of paintings and poems by Linda Alice Dewey and Anne-Marie Oomen. This small exhibition of work runs April 29 through August 11.
On The Precipice is composed of nine pastel paintings by Linda Alice Dewey, and nine companion poems by Anne-Marie Oomen, both Leelanau County residents. The inspiration for this body of work began with a photograph posted on Facebook, which lead to a creative back-and-forth between the two artists. The GAAC is exhibiting four of these works as an exploration of how artists collaborate, and the tradition of ekphrasis – the practice of creating a literary description of a work of art. A video conversation with both artists goes deeper into why and how artists collaborate, and how visual images inspire a written response.
An online version of the exhibition may be viewed here: GlenArborArt.org/EXHIBITS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

The geography and geology of the Sleeping Bear Dunes will be the focus of writer Rosalie Sanara Petrouske’s work during her May 15 – 28 artist residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. Petrouske, a resident of Grand Ledge, Michigan, will spend two weeks working on a series of haiku poems inspired by the area’s lakes and the dunes.
Each of the GAAC’s artist-residents offer a conversational presentation at the end of their stay. The presentations begin at noon at the GAAC. They are free, and open to the public. On May 27 Petrouske will discuss poems written in both traditional and modern haiku forms – an ancient, Japanese poetic form concerned with the natural world — and the poems she is editing for a volume of poems.
Since the 1990s, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s AIR program offers up to seven, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space, or to develop an on-going project. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org/EVENTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

CLOTHESLINE EXHIBIT: PRAYER FLAGS
May 28 – August 18, 2022
The Glen Arbor Arts Center looks to the East for inspiration for the 2022 Clothesline Exhibit. This year’s theme is prayer flags. The Clothesline Prayer Flags Exhibit [May 27 – August 18] is an open-air exhibition of small work. It is part of the GAAC’s exhibition FLAGS [in the GAAC Main Gallery May 27 – August 18]. Makers of all skill levels contributed their own versions of the traditional prayer flags in a wide variety of media.
A Tibetan prayer flag is a colorful, rectangular cloth, often found strung along trails and peaks high in the Himalayas. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside, and for other purposes. Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all-pervading space.
Prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all. The flags are primarily for the benefit of the world, not for the individual who hangs them. It is believed that the sacred texts and symbols printed on them have a vibration that is activated and carried by the wind, so that all who are touched by that wind are blessed.
NEW IN 2022: Unlike past Clothesline Exhibits, this year’s work/the prayer flags will NOT be exhibited in a clear envelope. They will hang in the open air, and will be subjected to the elements – in keeping with the spirit and traditions of the practice. Faded color is a good sign in a prayer flag. It means the prayers have been carried by the wind. The more faded the flag, the more prayers that have been spread.
The Prayer Flags exhibition is an outdoor exhibit. It can be viewed daily, at any time. For more information go to GlenArborArt.Org/EXHIBITS; or call 231/334-6112

Flags are objects that are saturated with meaning. The Glen Arbor Arts Center will explore some of that territory in its summer 2022 exhibition FLAGS. The exhibition opens May 27, and continues through August 18. FLAGS may be viewed in the GAAC Main Gallery and online, GlenArborArt.Org/EXHIBITS.
Flags represent everything — from a nation to a world view to one’s affinity and allegiance to a sports team. They’re objects that are saturated with meaning. The GAAC’s FLAGS exhibit offers a variety of flags — artwork that comments on the state of our nation’s culture wars; flags that show sojourners the way to freedom; flags that are prayerful; patriotic in a very traditional sense; and pay homage to the seasons.
Visitors can explore the exhibition through two other programs:
Community Prayer Flag Project: The 2022 Clothesline Exhibit will springboard off the FLAGS exhibition. Using the Tibetan prayer flag as a model and inspiration, we’ll convene a community effort to create prayer flags for our time. An outdoor exhibit, hung from clotheslines in the GAAC Front Yard and Grove. FREE. May 27 – August 18.

Cars in the Park, May 28th 2022
Northport Cars in the Park is the longest-running auto show in Leelanau County. Held annually on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 28th, 2022 will be the 24th Anniversary!
The car show began in 1998 at the request of the Northport Omena Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber wanted to find a way to begin the tourist season early with an event over Memorial Day weekend. At that time George Irvine had been successfully directing car events in Traverse City for a number of years and he was asked to start a car show in Northport on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Since George was a long-time volunteer fireman, it was agreed that the car show would be a fundraiser for the Northport Omena Firefighters Association. When the Firefighter’s Association decided to end their involvement in the event after the 2014 show, they turned to George’s son, Darin Irvine, to carry on the tradition. Darin gathered a group of local car nuts who shared his enthusiasm for ensuring the survival of the popular event into a committee of advisors. These advisors, as well as a multitude of additional volunteers on the day of the show, join him in a common cause. Darin Irvine Custom Automotive Restoration is the lead sponsor for the event and provides the administration required for a successful car show. The Leelanau Township Community Foundation as well as Dick and Sherry Koenig have been the other two lead sponsors for the show since 2015. For 2022 Sherry Koenig is sponsoring the show again, this time in loving memory of Richard, who loved the event.
The name Cars in the Park stemmed from the setting of the car show, as Haserot park was chosen for the venue. There have been shows where intrepid car enthusiasts have braved cold weather and rain, but mostly the weather has been cooperative so the owners of classic cars and the many spectators can enjoy a family-friendly event in a beautiful lakeside park.
Northport Village has wholeheartedly supported the show throughout the years and the show continues to thrive in Haserot Park. Local residents continue to volunteer to help with the show and the local businesses provide door prizes and enthusiastically welcome the crowds of spectators.
