Walking Tour with Christopher Struble ~ Thursday, May 19th • 2:00 PM
By 1900, there were approximately 6,000 full time residents and 125,000 summer visitors in Petoskey. The New Arlington Hotel was larger and grander than Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel and the rail stations handled over 100 trains and over 5000 passengers per day in the peak season.
This tour explains why and how the city grew while visiting historic sites from that time period. It lasts approximately 90 minutes and focuses on the city center (Pennsylvania Park, Lake Street, Mitchell Street, and Howard Street). Register here.

Event Details
The Nature Conservancy’s Maxton Plains Preserve is a globally rare area of exposed limestone bedrock and shallow soils. These harsh environments are dominated by grasses, sedges, and wildflowers like early buttercup, early saxifrage, and prairie smoke, but also present the opportunity to discover detailed fossils exposed in the calcareous bedrock like nautiloid cephalopods. The Haacks, long-time summer residents, will be your guides on this tour.
- Meet: Drummond Island Ferry parking area
- Time: 8:40 AM ferry – 1:10 PM ferry*
- Guides: Robert and Sheridan Haack
- Limit: 25 participants, pre-registration required.
- Cost: $40 (includes lunch)
For more information or to register for this event, visit the Aldo Leopold Festival website.
*Allow at least 35 minutes to drive the 28 miles from Hessel to DeTour Village. The ferry is first-come, first-served, so we recommend getting in line by 8:25 AM (depart) / 12:50 PM (return) or earlier. If you miss the morning ferry, you are on your own to rendezvous with the group. Ferries leave the mainland on the 0:40 and return on the 0:10 of every hour.

LITTLE TRAVERSE CONSERVANCY
MOSS & LICHEN TOUR
Walking Tour with Brad Von Blon ~ Oden Island Nature Preserve
Thursday, June 2nd • 4:00 PM
Brad will discuss the moss and lichens during a hike of this beautiful property. A successful fundraising effort in 2000 resulted in the Conservancy’s purchase of this large, undeveloped waterfront property. The acquisition closed the door on a controversial 34-unit subdivision proposed for the site. Now the preserve helps maintain the water quality of Crooked Lake, which lies near the upper portion of the Inland Waterway, a 40-mile navigable waterway that boaters can take into Lake Huron at Cheboygan. Register here.

Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Concert
Date: June 4
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Always a popular concert, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony is sure to be a crowd favorite, according to Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Music Director Libor Ondras.
According to Ondras, the famous pianissimo opening — 16 measures with no secure sense of key or rhythm – does not so much depict the journey from darkness to light, or from chaos to order, as the birth of sound itself.
“There’s something astonishing about a deaf composer choosing to open a symphony with music that reveals, like no other music before it, the very essence of sound emerging from silence,” Ondras explained. “This symphony shows Beethoven using all the subtlety and mastery of his craft, a breakthrough work— music’s first crossover composition. It’s also likely that in the text he picked for the symphony’s finale— Schiller’s hymn to universal brotherhood—Beethoven found the sense of community he craved as a comfort against personal loss and loneliness.”

We are a club composed of people interested in all aspects of the world of fungi. Some are attracted to the foraging of wild mushrooms, their identification and harvest. Some want to further their interest in the medicinal aspects of wild mushrooms. Many people may simply enjoy the photography of fungi. Of course almost everyone is interested in the culinary aspects of mushrooms, either bought, grown or foraged. It is possible to grow edible mushrooms in the home with very modest investment in time and materials.
The club meets at 6 PM the second Wednesday of the month (excluding December). The structure of the club is very informal, although it is hoped that guest lectures will occur from time to time. Other than a general interest in the world of fungi there are no formal requirements to join. Members are encouraged to bring along mushrooms they have found so that the group may observe and possibly identify various fresh specimens. Many of the members have a Wild Mushroom Certification from the Michigan Department of Agriculture for the identification of edible mushrooms.
Next meeting is Wed., May 11th • 6 pm in Room 536 at the SCRC Student Community Center, near the gym at North Central Michigan College*. Further information can be obtained by contacting Michael Banyai at mikebanyai@gmail.com or call 231-330-0910

2022 Crescendo – Annual GLCO Fundraiser
The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is an important part of why our northern Michigan community is considered one of the “best places to live” – adding to the quality of life for our families and the broader community.
The Orchestra is supported by just one fundraising event annually, Crescendo, a gala event featuring entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, a sit-down dinner, live auctions and more. Proceeds from this event help underwrite our commitment to providing excellent live, classical music performances and top-notch music education.
As a community-supported orchestra, your commitment is essential to our success. You, and other supporters like you, are at the core of GLCO. It is your support of our artists and enthusiasm for our concerts that allow us to continue to grow.
By attending our concerts, contributing regularly, and attending Crescendo, you are making an investment in music performance and music education for our community, now and for generations to come.
This Crescendo fundraising event will take place Tuesday, June 21, at Castle Farms in Charlevoix. To learn more about Crescendo tickets and how to contribute, call the GLCO office at 231-487-0100.

It’s summer now! The weather is hot, and there are plants all around in flower or getting very large. Mushrooms are growing everywhere and even beginning to peak at this time! Foraging does not get much better than this. Bring a bottle of water for this hot summer class!
This class will be an intro to foraging class that will put an emphasis on all of the best summer plants that one can find in the northwestern lower peninsula. Foraging is a year round activity and can be a fun way to spend your days and nights during the summer months. In this class we will cover all of the basics of identification, edibility and other uses of commonly sought after wild plants.
This class will meet at 5 PM at the Grassy area between Higher Grounds Coffee (806 Red Drive, Traverse City, MI) and Pleasanton Bakery. Look for the baskets and the foraging books! Class length is typically 2.5-3 hours in length.
Foraging class will end with a sampling of wild edibles prepared by Madelyn Walters of Bloom Wildcraft. This has at times included breads, ferments, pestos, hummus, and an assortment of other delicious foods.
Please come to this class prepared for the weather. This means bringing adequate water to stay hydrated and cooling clothing as it could be a very hot time of the year. Be prepared to walk over potentially hilly terrain with uneven footing.
All Kids 12 and under are free to attend my classes so long as they do not disrupt the class flow or my ability to teach.
If anyone wants to take pictures or videos of me teaching please make sure that you do so in a manner that is not disruptive to me or to my other students. And make sure you tag me on Instagram @clay__bowers if you post to that social media platform.
Refund Policy: All refunds will only be issued at 75% of the original price(I get charged a percentage by squarspace) and no refunds will be issued within 6 days of the date of the class. If you know ahead of time that you cannot make this class then I am happy to switch your purchase to a different class so long as you contact me 6 days prior to the date of the class.

The City of Grand Rapids proclaims Never Give Up Day
This August 18, the City of Grand Rapids proudly joins community members celebrating Never Give Up Day and has proclaimed August 18, 2022, as Never Give Up Day.
Never Give Up Day is a global celebration day focused on cultivating a mindset of determination. The mayoral proclamation signals the city’s role in recognizing the importance of never giving up and invites its citizens to make this day a springboard for awareness-raising actions. Never Give Up Day provides a common platform for health and social care providing associations, NPO’s, charities, sports teams and businesses in their efforts to establish a call to action.
Many philanthropic causes have dedicated awareness months or days to hold their call to action or fundraising, but few can engage so much attention, touching so many hearts, and connecting so many people to the same degree as Never Give Up Day. The day not only applauds people for reaching their goals but also supports those who are still trying to achieve their goals.
Never Give Up Day is a day we convince ourselves and the world that we are strong, determined and able to achieve our goals. Whether it is reaching your dream or fighting illness. Whether financial foes cause you stress and despair or relationship tension negatively impacts your emotional and physical health. Whether it is hard to get over someone you’ve lost or hard to do when you’ve been let down and left out. Event Details
Note: At this time, masks are optional inside NCMC buildings.
