This FREE program was developed by Discovery Center & Pier in partnership with Inland Seas Education Association, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, & the Northwest Michigan Fishing Club. The program will focus on teaching youth aged 9-14 about Great Lakes food webs & basic fishing techniques. Pre-registration is required. Two sessions will be offered: 9-11:30am (arrive at 8:30am) & 1:30-4pm (arrive at 1pm).

It’s the first day of summer and we are kicking off Forest School with an afternoon of hikes and observations. Students will get their Forest School journal where they will document their findings during Forest School sessions. This one will center on safety outdoors, Leave no Trace principles and how we interact with nature.

This fun family event is back! Join us for this FUN Weekend!

Springs Park in Downtown Frankfort. The fun begins with a Nite-crawler Hunt on Friday. The Kids gather at Mineral Springs Park at dusk with their flashlights, rain gear (just in case) and buckets to gather their WORMS! Gotta have worms to go Fishin’.

Then, Saturday, bright and early, starting at 8 a.m., bring the whole family to enjoy a day of FISHING! The kids will receive free t-shirts, free pizza (compliments of Frankfort A. Papano’s Pizza), drinks & sweet treats compliments of Family Fare and Frankfort-Elberta Chamber of Commerce. Kids! Bring your fishing rod. If you don’t have one, we will provide one for you!

There will be no entry fees and no licenses required for kids! No kid is turned away but we ask that every kid is accompanied by a parent or adult. Last year we had more than 100 kids show up for these fun events.

If you have any used fishing equipment appropriate for kids you’d like to donate, you can drop it off at the Frankfort-Elberta Area Chamber of Commerce at 517 Main Street. Fire and feed!  In this session students will be learning how to make fire, stay safe around fire, and create all-natural bird feeders with pine cones, melted lard, and bird seed.

This session is for the birds! North Sky Raptors will be attending with their educational birds to teach this session. Forest Schoolers will get to see first-hand the special adaptations raptors use to survive in northern Michigan.

Macroinvertebrates in the river! Learn why they are important to the river ecosystem, how to identify common macroinvertebrates, and how to clean your boots and equipment to help stop the spread of invasive species.

This is our last session of Forest School where we will use all our new skills we have learned to go on an exploration expedition! Forest Schoolers will spend time out in the Sturgeon River Preserve identifying different plants and animals that they see. They will also learn about citizen science and how to contribute to scientific discovery by report their findings on iNaturalist!
