Pennsylvania artist Ruth Trok will use her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency to produce a body of porcelain pots and vessels that explore the interaction between native and invasive species in Leelanau County. Trok, a ceramist, will talk about her project during a public presentation June 9, noon, at the GAAC, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The presentation is free.

Since the 1990s, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The Glen Arbor Arts Center welcomes its 2023 musicians-in-residence, Interlochen Public Radio’s The PULSE Saxophone Quartet. PULSE will be performing in Glen Arbor June 12-25 in off-stage places creating intimate experiences that close the gap between audiences and classical musicians. The first concert will be Friday, June 16, 7pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center front porch. The final concert will be held at the Leelanau School Beach at 7 pm on June 22.

The Forging For Peace Project blacksmiths return to the Glen Arbor Arts Center Forge on Saturday, May 20, Sunday, June 18, Sunday, July 23, and Sunday, August 20 from 11 am – 3 pm. The demonstrations are free and open to the public.

These Northern Michigan artists and craftsmen use the ancient art of blacksmithing as part of a world-wide project to raise funds for non-profits focused on peacemaking. Coffee With The Authors is a live, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. This Glen Arbor Arts Center series continues July 22, 11 am with author Jerry Dennis and artist/illustrator Glenn Wolff, both of Traverse City, in a conversation about working collaboratively. Sarah Bearup-Neal, GAAC gallery manager, leads the discussion.

Dennis and Wolff have worked together for more than 30 years. Together, they’ve published nine books about the natural world – stories, myths, natural histories, fly fishing, and wooden canoes. Their collaborations have spanned the era of sending drafts by fax to ZOOM, and back to letterpress artwork, books, and broadsides published in small, hand-built batches through their joint project, Big Maple Press. Dennis and Wolff will talk about how the collaborative process works for them, the mechanics, and the nuances of working together on a shared project.

Coffee With The Authors is a live, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the writing craft and process. This Glen Arbor Arts Center series continues July 30, 1 pm with poet Holly Wren Spaulding in a conversation about keeping and banning words. Sarah Bearup-Neal, GAAC gallery manager, leads the discussion. Spaulding, a Northern Michigan native now living in Southern Maine, published her third book of poems, Familiars, in 2020. It was a response to the 2015 deletion of words by the Oxford Junior Dictionary. The OJD’s deleted-words list included names of flora and fauna, in order to make room for newer words from the world of technology, such as “chatroom” and “bullet point.”  Familiars is full of poems about “trees, flowers, magic, touch, memory, erasure, power, and [Spaulding’s] grief over the changing climate.” Spaulding’s work is a reflection of her long, close association with the natural world. In her July 30 conversation, Spaulding will talk about the power of words, choosing them with care, and the ways in which she works to keep language vital through her writing. Percussionist Lori Fithian brings her collection of hand drums and percussion instruments to the Manitou Music series on Saturday, August 19, 1 – 3 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor.

New Music Detroit makes it Manitou Music debut on Thursday, August 24, at 7 pm at the Glen Lake School’s indoor auditorium. Glen Lake School is located at 3375 W Burdickville Rd, Maple City.

New Music Detroit is presented by the GAAC’s community sponsor Interlochen Public Radio. New Music Detroit (NMD) is a collective of musicians dedicated to performing groundbreaking musical works from the late 20th century to the present day. Shoemaker, a Leelanau County resident, published Children of the Catastrophe, in 2022. Set in the early 1900s, Shoemaker crafts a fictionalized telling of a Greek family’s progress through the final, turbulent decades of the Ottoman Empire. Using the historical record as her map, Shoemaker builds a multi-generational story. In her August 26 conversation, Shoemaker will talk about how historical fact informs her fiction, and how she develops the voices of characters whose lives are rooted in a lost time.

Caledonia, Michigan, artist Kathy Mohl will use her Glen Arbor Arts Center residency to create a plein air immersion project. Mohl, an experienced plein air painter, will push her practice into new areas. She’ll experiment with different paints and media, and explore the quality and changes in light when she paints at different times of day. Meg Staley hand builds women’s clothing. Each piece is a composition that allows her to bring to it the myriad surface design techniques that make up her distinctive visual vocabulary. This is not, however, a story about fashion, but a life-long journey that uses clothing as an expressive tool.
